ChatGPT launches OpenAI OpenAI opens ChatGPT as a free research preview, fine-tuned from a model in the GPT-3.5 series.
ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant, launched on Nov 30, 2022, and now one app with Chat, Work and Codex. This viki documents every OpenAI product as of Nov 6, 2026: every plan and usage limit, the GPT-6 models and the model picker, memory, projects, plugins, deep research, voice, images, Work and dots, Codex in the app, CLI, IDE and cloud, the OpenAI API, the retired products from Sora to Atlas, the history from GPT-1, and fair comparisons with Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, Perplexity and the coding agents, saying where each one wins.
ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant: as of Nov 6, 2026 it is one app with three modes, Chat for questions and conversation, Work for longer tasks that end in a finished document, spreadsheet or site, and Codex for software development (ChatGPT release notes, Jul 9, 2026). It runs on the web at chatgpt.com, in the desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, and in the iPhone and Android apps. Anyone can use it free; paid plans run from $8 a month for Go to $500 a month for the top Pro plan. OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use it each week (Oct 21, 2026). The clip is OpenAI's own screen recording: ChatGPT in the browser switched to Work, asked to read a calendar, Slack and Drive and prepare the day, then set to send a briefing every morning.
This viki covers ChatGPT, Codex, the OpenAI API and every other OpenAI product, current and retired, with fair comparisons against the competition. It is independent of OpenAI.

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT began on Nov 30, 2022 as a chatbot fine-tuned from a model in the GPT-3.5 series, free during what OpenAI called a research preview. Four years later it is a family of tools in one place. In Chat it answers questions, writes, explains, searches the web, reads files and makes images. In Work it acts as an agent that researches, works across connected apps and produces finished deliverables. In Codex it reads, writes and runs code. OpenAI's own help page puts the split plainly: Chat is "for fast, conversational assistance", Work is "designed for longer, multi-step work" and Codex "remains dedicated to software development" (ChatGPT Work and Codex).
The answers come from OpenAI's GPT models. Since Oct 7, 2026 the Chat tab runs GPT-6 with Intelligent UI, which lets an answer include charts, forms, buttons and small interactive tools as well as text (Intelligent UI). Which model a person gets depends on the plan: the full list is on ChatGPT Models.
Chat, Work and Codex
The three modes share one account, one sidebar and one usage picture, but they behave differently.
| Mode | What it is for | Where | Plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat | Questions, writing, search, images, voice | Web, desktop, mobile | All, including signed out |
| Work | Longer tasks ending in documents, spreadsheets, slides, reports or Sites | Web and mobile (cloud), desktop (local files and apps) | Limited on Free and Go (desktop only); Plus and above |
| Codex | Software development: reading, editing and running code | Desktop app, CLI, IDE extension, cloud | All plans, with limits |
Sources: ChatGPT pricing and ChatGPT Work and Codex, read Nov 6, 2026.
Work and Codex draw on the same allowance: ChatGPT Work usage uses "the same pricing, credits, and usage limits as Codex". Chat has its own, separate limits (ChatGPT Usage Limits).
Plans and prices
Every plan has unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails; the plans differ in the models, the tools and how much of them each one allows. The US prices as of Nov 6, 2026:
| Plan | Price | In short |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | A Luna model, limited uploads, images, voice, deep research, Codex and desktop Work; may show ads |
| Go | $8 a month | More messages with tools, uploads, images and memory; may show ads |
| Plus | $20 a month | GPT-6 Sol and reasoning levels, projects and scheduled tasks, Codex and Work on every device; no ads |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500 a month | GPT-6 Pro (Astra), far more Work and Codex, dots, Space, monthly API credits |
| Business | $20 per user a month annually, $25 monthly | Workspaces for teams of two or more, no training on workspace data |
| Enterprise and Edu | Through sales | Admin, security and compliance controls |
Sources: Codex and ChatGPT pricing and ChatGPT pricing, read Nov 6, 2026.
Prices outside the US are set locally and are not published as text; the full comparison, regional notes and the free special plans for teachers and clinicians are on ChatGPT Plans and Pricing. The most common choice is weighed on ChatGPT Plus vs Pro.
Models
As of Nov 6, 2026, the model picker in Chat offers GPT-6 at Instant, Medium, High and Extra High, all powered by GPT-6 Sol on paid plans, and a Pro option powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model (GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT). Free and Go users get a Luna model and a Think button for harder questions. OpenAI's own pages disagree on which Luna: the help articles updated in early November say GPT-5.6 Luna, while the pricing page and the Oct 7, 2026 release note say GPT-6 Luna.
Work and Codex have their own models, separate from Chat's: GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-6 Astra, which "are not available in regular ChatGPT conversations". The history of every model, from GPT-3.5 to GPT-6, is on GPT Model History, and the ones ChatGPT no longer offers are on Retired ChatGPT Models.

Pages
Codex
- AGENTS.md
AGENTS.md is a plain Markdown file of instructions for AI coding agents, a "README for agents", that Codex reads before doing any work. Codex loads a global ~/.codex/AGENTS.md and then every AGENTS.md from the repository root down to the working folder, closest last, up to 32 KiB; /init writes a first one. The open format is now stewarded by the Agentic AI Foundation.
- Codex
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent: it reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands and tests, reviews pull requests and works in the cloud. As of Nov 6, 2026 it lives inside the ChatGPT desktop app, in the Codex CLI, in IDE extensions, in Codex Cloud and on mobile, and every ChatGPT plan includes some of it, Free and Go too.
- Codex App
The Codex app is now the Codex view of the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, where Codex runs parallel chats, worktrees, Computer Use, Appshots, Goal mode, Record and Replay and remote control from a phone. It replaced the standalone Codex app OpenAI launched on Feb 2, 2026.
- Codex CLI
Codex CLI is OpenAI's open-source coding agent for the terminal: install it with one command, run codex in a project folder, sign in with ChatGPT or an API key, and it reads, edits and runs your code inside a sandbox. This page covers its commands, models, approval modes, config.toml, codex exec, resume and MCP as of Nov 6, 2026.
- Codex Cloud
Codex Cloud runs OpenAI's coding agent on OpenAI's servers: you connect GitHub repositories, publish a cloud environment, and start tasks from ChatGPT on the web, the desktop app or a phone, each in its own workspace that keeps working while your computer sleeps. It needs ChatGPT Plus or higher; Free and Go do not include it.
- Codex Code Review
Codex code review posts a GitHub review on your pull requests when you comment @codex review or turn on automatic reviews at chatgpt.com/settings/code-review; it flags only P0 and P1 issues and follows Code Review Rules in your AGENTS.md. GitLab merge requests are in beta, and Codex also reviews local changes with /review and works from Slack, Linear and a GitHub Action.
- Codex IDE Extension
The Codex IDE extension puts OpenAI's coding agent beside your code in VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and VS Code Insiders (Marketplace id openai.chatgpt), while Xcode and JetBrains IDEs offer Codex through their own AI assistants. It uses the same ChatGPT plan, models and config.toml as the Codex CLI and the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Codex Models
As of Nov 6, 2026 Codex recommends four models: GPT-6 Astra (most capable), GPT-6.1 Sol (the default, near Astra at lower cost), GPT-6.1 Terra (fast, for writing and computer use) and GPT-6 Luna (most efficient). They replaced a line of coding-tuned models that ran from codex-1 in 2025 through GPT-5-Codex, GPT-5.1-Codex-Max and GPT-5.3-Codex.
- Codex Pricing and Limits
Codex comes with every ChatGPT plan as of Nov 6, 2026: Free ($0) and Go ($8) get GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, Plus ($20) gets about 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages per five hours plus Codex Cloud, and Pro ($100, $200 or $500) has no five-hour limit. Credits extend any plan, and an API key bills by the token instead.
- Codex SDK
The Codex SDK lets programs run OpenAI's Codex agent: npm install @openai/codex-sdk for TypeScript (Node.js 18 or later) or pip install openai-codex for Python (3.10 or later). For CI there is also codex exec, the non-interactive CLI mode, and the GitHub Action openai/codex-action@v1; the App Server is the protocol for building full Codex clients.
- Codex Security
Codex Security is OpenAI's application security agent: it builds a threat model of a repository, looks for vulnerabilities, tries to confirm them in a sandbox and proposes patches. It began as Aardvark (announced Oct 30, 2025), became Codex Security in research preview on Mar 6, 2026, and now runs as a desktop plugin, a cloud plugin, a CLI and SDK, and pull request Security Review, alongside Daybreak for approved defenders.
Comparisons
- ChatGPT Atlas vs Other AI Browsers
ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's AI browser, stopped working on Aug 9, 2026; ChatGPT's browsing now lives in the desktop app's built-in browser and the ChatGPT browser extension, and the AI browsers still sold are Perplexity's Comet (free), Gemini in Chrome, Edge with Copilot, Dia and Claude in Chrome.
- ChatGPT Images vs Nano Banana
As of Nov 6, 2026 OpenAI's GPT Image models behind ChatGPT Images hold the top five places on Arena's text-to-image leaderboard, ahead of Google's Nano Banana 2.1 in seventh, while Nano Banana is cheaper per image in the API; Midjourney is not on that leaderboard and remains the choice for its own look, and FLUX is the cheapest high-volume option.
- ChatGPT vs Claude
ChatGPT and Claude cost the same $20 a month at their main paid tier, but they win at different tasks. Claude leads the public leaderboards for writing and coding as of Nov 6, 2026, while ChatGPT makes images, has the more generous free plan and offers cheaper and pricier plans that Claude lacks.
- ChatGPT vs Copilot
Microsoft Copilot is the better buy if you want Word, Excel and PowerPoint themselves, since Microsoft 365 Premium bundles the Office apps, 2 TB of storage for up to six people and Copilot for $19.99 a month. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and is the stronger AI on its own: Microsoft does not say which models consumer Copilot uses, while ChatGPT's models rank on public leaderboards.
- ChatGPT vs DeepSeek
DeepSeek publishes its current models as open weights under the MIT license and sells a cheap API, but it stores data in China; ChatGPT's top models score higher on independent tests as of Nov 6, 2026 and offer images, voice and a training opt-out setting. For the cheapest capable API model the two are close, and OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna even undercuts DeepSeek's peak-hour price.
- ChatGPT vs Gemini
Google's Gemini ranks above ChatGPT on the public chat leaderboards as of Nov 6, 2026, costs about the same at $19.99 a month for Google AI Pro, makes video and comes with storage and Google app features. ChatGPT is ahead on coding agents and gives more on its free plan, and the two are close on most everyday tasks.
- ChatGPT vs Grok
ChatGPT scores well above Grok on independent reasoning and coding leaderboards as of Nov 6, 2026, and lets you opt out of training. Grok, sold in The X Subscription from $8 a month with Cursor and X Premium included, makes video, which ChatGPT no longer does, and won a Tom's Guide test of everyday questions.
- ChatGPT vs Perplexity
Perplexity is a search-first answer engine with a free AI browser, Comet, while ChatGPT is a general assistant that also searches, makes images and writes code. ChatGPT's free plan is more generous as of Nov 6, 2026, and no independent test has measured which one answers search questions better.
- Codex vs Antigravity
OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity are both agentic coding tools with an app, an IDE side and a command line; as of Nov 6, 2026 Antigravity is free for individuals and its Google AI Pro tier runs Gemini 4 Argon and Claude Opus 5.5, while Codex runs OpenAI's GPT-6 models and adds cloud tasks and GitHub reviews; Gemini CLI moved individual users to the Antigravity CLI on Jun 18, 2026.
- Codex vs Claude Code
OpenAI Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code are both coding agents that read a repository, run commands and make changes; Claude Code leads the independent coding leaderboards as of Nov 6, 2026, while Codex is cheaper to start (it is on ChatGPT Free and Go) and runs cloud tasks and GitHub reviews from the same ChatGPT plan.
- Codex vs Cursor
OpenAI Codex is a coding agent included with ChatGPT plans, while Cursor is an AI code editor now owned by SpaceX and sold inside The X Subscription with Grok models; as of Nov 6, 2026 Codex's GPT-6 models score far higher on independent leaderboards, while Cursor offers a full editor and other makers' models at API prices.
- Codex vs GitHub Copilot
OpenAI Codex is a coding agent included with ChatGPT plans, while GitHub Copilot is GitHub's assistant with completions, a coding agent and models from several makers, from $10 a month; as of Nov 6, 2026 Copilot is cheaper and lives where code is hosted, and its Pro+ plan can even run Codex as an agent, while Codex gives more agent use per dollar with OpenAI's own models.
- OpenAI API vs Claude API
The OpenAI API and Anthropic's Claude API charge the same for their top models ($10 input, $50 output per 1M tokens for GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1) and their cheapest ($0.10 and $0.50 for GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5), as of Nov 6, 2026. Claude leads the dated coding and text leaderboards and charges no long-context premium; OpenAI is the only one of the two with image, speech and realtime voice models.
- Sora vs Veo
OpenAI's Sora app and website shut down on Apr 26, 2026 and its API on Sep 24, 2026, so the choice for AI video is now between Google's Veo and Gemini Omni, Runway, Kling, Seedance, Grok Imagine and others; on Arena's text-to-video leaderboard of Nov 5, 2026 Google's Gemini Omni leads, and Sora 2 Pro had ranked just above Veo 3.1.
- When to Use Something Else
ChatGPT is not the best choice for every task as of Nov 6, 2026. Claude leads for writing and coding, Gemini for blind-vote answer quality and video, Microsoft 365 Premium for Office, Perplexity for a free AI browser and DeepSeek for open weights, while ChatGPT stays the better pick for a free plan, images, voice and reasoning against most rivals.
Developers
- Agents SDK
The OpenAI Agents SDK is an open-source library for Python (openai-agents) and TypeScript (@openai/agents) that runs agents with tools, handoffs and tracing inside your own app. OpenAI also offers the hosted Agents API (beta since Sep 10, 2026) and ChatKit, while Agent Builder shuts down Nov 30, 2026.
- API Rate Limits
OpenAI API rate limits depend on your usage tier (Free, Build, Launch or Grow), which rises automatically as total credit purchases reach $5, $100 and $500. On the Build tier GPT-6 Astra allows 5,000 requests and 1,000,000 tokens a minute, and going over returns HTTP 429.
- Apps SDK
The Apps SDK was OpenAI's 2025 toolkit for building apps inside ChatGPT on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Since Jul 9, 2026 apps live inside plugins, and the Apps SDK documentation now opens OpenAI's Plugins docs, where you build an MCP server, optional UI and skills and submit them to the ChatGPT Directory.
- Batch API
The OpenAI Batch API runs up to 50,000 requests from one file within 24 hours at 50% off the normal price. Flex processing gives the same discount on ordinary calls that can be slow, Fast mode costs double for quicker answers, and prompt caching cuts the price of repeated prompt prefixes.
- Fine-Tuning
OpenAI is winding down fine-tuning: the platform is closed to new users, new job creation was restricted on Jul 2, 2026, and existing customers lose job creation on Jan 6, 2027. Fine-tuned models keep serving until their base models are retired, and no GPT-6 model can be fine-tuned.
- OpenAI API
The OpenAI API lets programs call OpenAI's models (GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra, GPT-6 Luna, image, voice and transcription models) with an API key, billed per token. New projects use the Responses API through the official SDKs, with documentation at developers.openai.com.
- OpenAI API Pricing
OpenAI API prices are per 1M tokens: GPT-6 Astra costs $10 input and $50 output, GPT-6.1 Sol $2 and $10, GPT-6.1 Terra $1 and $5, and GPT-6 Luna $0.10 and $0.50, as of Nov 6, 2026. Batch and Flex halve those prices, Fast doubles them.
- Realtime API
The OpenAI Realtime API streams speech in and speech out with low latency over WebRTC or WebSocket, using models such as gpt-realtime-2.1 and the full-duplex GPT-Live 1 ($0.05 a minute), as of Nov 6, 2026. It also handles live transcription and speech-to-speech translation.
- Responses API
The Responses API is OpenAI's recommended endpoint for new projects, combining model calls, built-in tools, structured outputs and conversation state in one request. Chat Completions is still supported, and the Assistants API it replaced shut down on Aug 26, 2026.
- Whisper and Audio Models
OpenAI's speech models turn audio into text and text into speech. As of Nov 6, 2026 the newest transcription model is GPT-Transcribe at about $0.0045 a minute, Whisper (whisper-1) and the GPT-4o transcribe models shut down Feb 26, 2027, and the text to speech models shut down Jan 6, 2027.
Features
- Account Security
Secure a ChatGPT account in Settings > Security: turn on multi-factor authentication or passkeys, review active sessions and security history, and for the strongest protection enroll in Advanced Account Security, which requires passkeys or security keys plus recovery keys.
- Agent Mode
Agent mode (ChatGPT agent) lets ChatGPT do tasks on the web in its own virtual browser, such as filling forms or booking, asking before important steps. It launched on Jul 17, 2025, replacing Operator; it is for paid plans, with 40 tasks a month on Plus and 400 on Pro, and longer agentic work now also runs in ChatGPT Work.
- Chat History and Search
ChatGPT keeps every saved chat in the sidebar until you delete it; Search (Ctrl+K or Cmd+K on the web) finds chats, projects, images and documents, archived chats stay searchable, and deleted chats are erased within 30 days.
- ChatGPT Browser Extension
The ChatGPT browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi lets the ChatGPT desktop app read and act in your own browser, mention open tabs in a chat, and, in every browser but Opera, open a side chat next to a page; it needs the desktop app and replaced the retired Atlas browser.
- ChatGPT Desktop App
The ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows, with Linux in public preview, holds Chat, Work and Codex in one window. It is a free download from chatgpt.com/download for every plan, Free included.
- ChatGPT in Office
ChatGPT works inside Excel, Google Sheets, PowerPoint and Word as a sidebar add-in that builds and edits files in place; it is on every plan including Free, with limited use on Free and Go, while Plus and Pro draw on the same agentic allowance as Codex.
- ChatGPT in Other Apps
ChatGPT also answers outside its own app: on WhatsApp and by phone at 1-800-CHATGPT (+1-800-242-8478), on Kakao in South Korea and Viber, in Apple CarPlay, Slack, Apple Messages on the Mac and the Office add-ins.
- ChatGPT Mobile App
The ChatGPT app is free on the App Store for iPhone (iOS 18.0 or later) and on Google Play for Android, made by OpenAI. It adds voice, the camera, document scanning, Lock Screen voice and Codex Remote to what ChatGPT does on the web.
- ChatGPT Search
ChatGPT search looks up the web and answers with linked sources, on every plan and even without signing in. It launched on Oct 31, 2024 after the SearchGPT prototype; ChatGPT searches on its own when a question needs it, or you choose Search from the tools menu.
- ChatGPT Sites
ChatGPT Sites builds and hosts a working website from a chat in ChatGPT Work or Codex, with its own address, a database of up to 10 GB and custom domains; it is on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise but not Free or Go, and building counts toward Codex usage.
- ChatGPT Space

- Deep Research
Deep research is ChatGPT's tool for long, multi-step research: it proposes an editable plan, searches the web and your connected apps, and returns a cited report you can download as Markdown, Word or PDF. Every plan has it, with Free and Go limited; type /Deepresearch or pick it from the + menu.
- Dots
A dot is ChatGPT's always-on agent, launched Sep 29, 2026 on GPT-6 Astra, with its own cloud computer that keeps working between chats; it is for Pro users 18 and over outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, Business Premium, and Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, and US Pro users can text it.
- File Uploads and Library
ChatGPT accepts up to 20 files per message on the web, documents up to 512 MB each, and up to 80 files every 3 hours, while Free accounts get 3 uploads a day; everything uploaded is kept in Library, which holds 500 MB on Free up to 100 GB on Pro.

- Health in ChatGPT
Health in ChatGPT connects your medical records, Apple Health and apps such as One Medical and Function Health so ChatGPT can explain results and track changes; it is free for logged-in adults in the US on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, on the web and iOS, and its health data is never used to train models or target ads.
- Intelligent UI
Intelligent UI, launched with GPT-6 in ChatGPT on Oct 7, 2026, lets answers in the Chat tab include charts, maps, forms, buttons, calculators and small games you can use in place; it is on every plan, from Instant to Extra High reasoning, but not in the Pro reasoning option.
- Locked Chats
Locked chats, new in ChatGPT on Oct 20, 2026, hide chosen conversations from your history and search behind a 4-digit account PIN or Face ID, on every plan from Free to Enterprise; resetting the PIN deletes them.
- Memory
ChatGPT memory lets ChatGPT remember your preferences and details from past chats, saved memories and other sources. You can view, edit or delete what it remembers, or turn it off, in Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Parental Controls
ChatGPT is for ages 13 and up, with a parent's permission under 18; parents link a teen's account in Settings > Parental controls to set quiet hours, turn off voice, images or memory, and get safety alerts, without seeing the teen's chats.
- Plugins
Plugins are ChatGPT's 2026 name for apps and connectors: packages that connect ChatGPT to services such as Gmail, Google Drive, Slack or iCloud and bundle skills for a task. You find them under Plugins in the sidebar or at chatgpt.com/plugins, on every plan.
- Privacy and Data Controls
ChatGPT trains on Free, Go, Plus and Pro chats by default unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings > Data controls; Business, Enterprise and Edu content is not used for training by default, and you can export or delete your data.
- Projects
Projects in ChatGPT keep related chats, files and instructions together in one folder-like workspace. Every plan, including Free, can create unlimited projects; files per project range from 5 on Free to 40 on Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu.
- Record Mode
Record mode turns meetings, lectures and voice notes into a transcript and summary in the ChatGPT macOS app, for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, up to 4 hours a session; since Sep 29, 2026 OpenAI points users to the newer Meetings plugin, a Mac beta for Pro and Business.
- Scheduled Tasks
Scheduled tasks make ChatGPT run a prompt later, on a repeating schedule, while watching for a change, or when a Gmail, Slack or GitHub event happens; Free and Go can keep 3 active tasks, Plus 5, Business and Edu 10, and Pro and Enterprise 15.
- Sharing Chats
To share a ChatGPT conversation, open it, select Share and copy the link; anyone with a personal-account link can read it, links never expire, and you delete them in Settings > Data controls > Shared links.
- Shopping in ChatGPT
Ask ChatGPT what to buy and it shows product results with prices and links, which OpenAI says are chosen independently and are not ads; it also offers shopping research buyer's guides, virtual try-on, Favorites and restaurant bookings, while Instant Checkout, launched in 2025, is no longer described on OpenAI's help pages.

- Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat is ChatGPT's incognito mode: the chat stays out of your history, does not create memories and is not used to train OpenAI's models, though OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
- Voice Mode
ChatGPT Voice lets you talk with ChatGPT out loud. Live, powered by GPT-Live-1.1 since Oct 15, 2026, is the newest; Advanced keeps video and screen sharing on mobile; Standard is turn by turn. Plus gets 3 hours a day, Pro $100 15 hours and Pro $200 unlimited, as of Nov 6, 2026.
