Canvas
Canvas was a ChatGPT workspace for editing writing and code beside the chat, launched in beta on Oct 3, 2024. It was removed from current models on May 28, 2026; writing blocks and interactive code blocks in the chat replaced it.
Canvas is gone from current ChatGPT models: on May 28, 2026 OpenAI said canvas "will no longer be available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking", and that writing and coding now happen directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks. Canvas was "a new interface for working with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects", opening in a separate window beside the chat, released in beta on Oct 3, 2024. Paid users could keep using it for a limited time through legacy models until those models were retired. To edit a document or code with ChatGPT today, use full-screen writing blocks, interactive code blocks or, on plans that include it, Pages in ChatGPT Space.

What did canvas do?
Canvas opened a window beside the conversation where a person and ChatGPT worked on the same document or code (OpenAI):
- Shortcuts: change the length of a text, debug code and other quick actions.
- Version history: a back button restored earlier versions.
- Automatic opening: canvas opened by itself when ChatGPT judged it would help, or on request.
Later updates in the release notes added canvas inside Custom GPTs, running Python code and a canvas shortcut (Dec 10, 2024), importing a response or code block into canvas on the web (Jan 15, 2025) and sharing a canvas (Feb 6, 2025).
When canvas launched
OpenAI released canvas on Oct 3, 2024 as an early beta on GPT-4o for Plus and Team users worldwide, with Enterprise and Edu the following week and a promise to bring it to Free users after the beta (OpenAI). On Dec 10, 2024 it became available in 4o by default for all users, Free and paid (OpenAI Help Center).
Why was canvas removed?
OpenAI's May 28, 2026 note gave the reason in one line: the writing and coding that canvas handled were now supported directly in chat responses. It had built those replacements over the months before (OpenAI Help Center):
| Date | Replacement |
|---|---|
| Feb 19, 2026 | Interactive code blocks: edit inline, preview diagrams and mini apps, review in split screen |
| Feb 27, 2026 | Export visuals from code blocks as images |
| Jun 8, 2026 | Full-screen writing blocks for essays, reports and similar, which can be saved to the Library or downloaded |
| Sep 29, 2026 | Pages in ChatGPT Space |
| Oct 16, 2026 | ChatGPT Slides in Space (Pro, Business, Enterprise) |
Notes from macOS record mode may still open as a canvas, according to OpenAI's record mode article.
What to use instead of canvas
- For writing: ask ChatGPT for a draft and open the writing block full screen to edit and save it.
- For code: use interactive code blocks in the chat, or Codex for real projects.
- For longer documents and slides: Pages and Slides in ChatGPT Space, on the plans that include it.
- For finished files: ChatGPT Work can produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
