Ads in ChatGPT
ChatGPT shows ads to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in 89 countries as of Nov 6, 2026, below answers and labeled as sponsored; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu have no ads, and Free users can turn ads off in exchange for lower limits.
Yes, ChatGPT has ads, but only on the Free and Go plans: "Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads" (Ads in ChatGPT). OpenAI started testing ads in the US on Feb 9, 2026 and, as of Nov 6, 2026, runs them in 89 countries. An ad appears below an answer, labeled as sponsored, and OpenAI says ads do not change what ChatGPT answers. To avoid them, Free users can switch them off and accept lower limits, or pay for Plus or a higher plan; Go has no ad-free option.

When OpenAI announced ads on Jan 16, 2026, it said "Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscriptions will not include ads" (Our approach to advertising), and that has held through Nov 6, 2026. Ads are shown only to logged-in users identified as adults: not to accounts that say they are under 18 or that OpenAI's age prediction places under 18 (release notes, Feb 9, 2026).
How do ads look in ChatGPT?
An ad appears below ChatGPT's response as a single ad unit, labeled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer (Ads in ChatGPT). OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad shown while an image is being generated. No ads appear:
- in Temporary Chats;
- next to conversations about health, mental health or politics;
- for political advertisers, whose ads OpenAI does not run;
- for accounts identified as under 18.
OpenAI says "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" (Testing ads in ChatGPT). Advertisers also run a separate format, Sponsored Agents, in a limited alpha (Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT Ads).
How are ads chosen, and what do advertisers see?
Ads are matched to the topic of your conversation, your past chats and your past interactions with ads (Testing ads in ChatGPT). Personalized ads were "not initially available" in the European Economic Area or Switzerland (Ads in ChatGPT).
Advertisers receive only aggregated numbers, such as impressions and clicks; "Advertisers never see your chats or personal details" (release notes, Feb 9, 2026). OpenAI deletes ads data within 30 days (Ads in ChatGPT). For your other data choices, see Privacy and Data Controls.
How to turn off ads in ChatGPT
On the Free plan:
- Open Settings > Ads controls.
- Choose Change plan to go ad-free.
- Select Reduce message limits.
The trade is "fewer messages and no access to some tools like image generation or deep research" (Ads in ChatGPT). To bring ads and the normal limits back, choose Show ads from the limit banner.
On Go there is no ad-free option. The other way to remove ads on any plan is to move to ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month or higher. ChatGPT Go vs Plus weighs that step.

The advertiser side
Advertisers buy ChatGPT ads by impressions (CPM) or by valid clicks (CPC), in a relevance-weighted second-price auction, with a suggested starting bid of "$3 to $5 USD per click" (Ads in ChatGPT: the basics). A self-service Ads Manager opened in the European markets on Aug 31, 2026, and in India, the Middle East and North Africa the same day (Expanding access to AI with ChatGPT ads). OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached "$1 billion in annualized revenue run rate" in under 200 days, and that "over 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns" by Oct 21, 2026 (26 new countries).
Why ChatGPT has ads
OpenAI announced its ad test in the same Jan 16, 2026 post that took ChatGPT Go worldwide, and framed both as expanding access (Our approach to advertising). Over the following months the Free plan gained unlimited text chats and the Think button (August 2026, release notes). Whether that trade suits you is your call; Is ChatGPT Free sets out what Free includes.
