Is ChatGPT Free

Yes. ChatGPT's Free plan costs nothing and gives unlimited everyday text chats as of Nov 6, 2026, with limits on uploads, images, voice, deep research and Codex, and ads in many countries.

Yes: ChatGPT is free to use. The Free plan costs $0 and, as of Nov 6, 2026, gives "unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards" (Free Tier FAQ), plus a limited allowance of file uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work. You can sign up at chatgpt.com, or ask questions there without signing in at all. What you give up compared with paying is the stronger reasoning models, larger allowances and, in many countries, an ad-free screen.

What do you get on ChatGPT Free?

The Free card on chatgpt.com/pricing lists, as of Nov 6, 2026: unlimited text chats with GPT-6, limited messages with uploads, limited image creation, limited voice chats, limited deep research, limited memory and context, limited Codex access and limited ChatGPT Work access on desktop.

Beyond the card, every plan including Free gets Search, Study Mode, Skills, Projects (5 files per project), Health, Finances in the US, Plugins and memory in a limited form (chatgpt.com/pricing, Projects help). Free users can also search the web, analyze data and upload images and files within their limits (Free Tier FAQ).

Which model does the Free plan use?

OpenAI's pages disagree. On Oct 7, 2026 OpenAI said Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna in Chat (release notes), and the pricing table on Nov 6, 2026 says the same. The Free Tier FAQ and the models article, both updated in the first days of November 2026, say Free users have GPT-5.6 Luna (GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT). Both are OpenAI's own pages, and either way Free gets a Luna model: OpenAI's most cost-efficient line, not the flagship Sol or Astra. See GPT-6 Luna.

The Think button

Free has no model picker, but it has a Think button for harder questions. OpenAI added it in August 2026, saying Free and Go would get "unlimited text chats and access to a new Think button" from the following week (release notes, Aug 6, 2026). Think spends more time reasoning before it answers. It uses GPT-5.6 Luna, not the GPT-5.6 Sol that paid plans use (models article). It came to the mobile app first and is rolling out on the web.

What is limited on Free?

OpenAI publishes few numbers for the Free plan. These are the ones it does state, as of Nov 6, 2026:

Feature Free plan limit Source
File uploads 3 a day Uploading files
Library storage 500 MB Library
Files per project 5 Projects
Scheduled tasks 3 active, at most once a day Tasks
Instant context window 27K tokens (about 12 pages) chatgpt.com/pricing
Voice "Limited access to GPT-Live-1.1 Quip" ChatGPT Voice
Images, deep research Limited, no number published Free Tier FAQ

The "Limited" items have counters in the app that tell you when you run out. Limits reset when you upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business. ChatGPT Usage Limits lists every published limit on every plan.

What Free does not include

Free has no GPT-6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra in Chat, no images with thinking, no ChatGPT Sites, no voice with video, no legacy models, and no Dots or ChatGPT Space (chatgpt.com/pricing). Codex Cloud is not included on Free or Go (Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan), though Codex itself is, in the desktop app with GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Terra. New Custom GPTs cannot be created on any personal account, Free included, and existing GPTs retire on Dec 11, 2026.

Using ChatGPT without an account

You can use ChatGPT at chatgpt.com without signing in. Logged-out users get the everyday model and fast answers to common questions (release notes, Apr 22, 2026), but not GPT-5.6 Sol, and their settings, including the training opt-out, are saved only in that browser (Data controls FAQ). Signing in for free adds chat history, memory, uploads, images and the other tools above.

Are there ads on ChatGPT Free?

Often, yes. OpenAI began testing ads for logged-in adults on Free and Go in the US on Feb 9, 2026 and had expanded them to 89 countries by Oct 21, 2026. Ads appear below an answer, labeled as sponsored, and never in Temporary Chats or in chats about health, mental health or politics (Ads in ChatGPT).

Free users can switch ads off: Settings > Ads controls > Change plan to go ad-free > Reduce message limits. The trade is fewer messages and "no access to some tools like image generation or deep research". The other way to lose them is to pay for Plus or more. Ads in ChatGPT has the full rules.

Is your data used for training on Free?

By default, yes: on personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts "data sharing is enabled by default" (Data controls FAQ). You can turn it off at Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and keep your chat history. See Privacy and Data Controls.

When is it worth paying?

Free is enough if you mostly chat, write and look things up. Paying starts to make sense when one of these is true:

  • You hit the limits on uploads, images or voice most days: ChatGPT Go at $8 a month in the US raises them and doubles the context window to 54K tokens.
  • You want stronger reasoning for coding, math or analysis: ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month adds GPT-6 Sol at Medium and High thinking.
  • You want no ads: Plus and above have none.
  • You code every day: Free's Codex allowance is small, and Plus adds Codex on the web, CLI and IDE.

What testers found

In a Jun 8, 2026 video comparing ChatGPT with Claude, Igor Pogany of The AI Advantage found ChatGPT "way more generous on the free plan" than Claude, as he had at $20. That is one reviewer's impression from use, not a measured comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT completely free? The Free plan costs nothing, with unlimited everyday text chats as of Nov 6, 2026. Uploads, images, voice, deep research and Codex are limited, and paid plans start at $8 a month.

Is ChatGPT free without limits? Text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse safeguards, but other tools are not: Free allows 3 file uploads a day and limited images, voice and deep research.

Can I use ChatGPT without signing up? Yes. chatgpt.com answers questions without an account, but you get no saved history, memory or uploads until you sign in.

Does ChatGPT Free use GPT-6? The pricing page says Free uses GPT-6 Luna; OpenAI's help articles updated in November 2026 say GPT-5.6 Luna. Neither is the GPT-6 Sol that paid plans use in Chat.

Can I turn off ads on ChatGPT Free? Yes, in Settings > Ads controls, by accepting lower message limits and losing image generation and deep research. Ads are not shown in Temporary Chats or to users under 18.

Is ChatGPT free for students? The Free plan is open to everyone. Students had extra offers in 2026, such as four free months of Plus for US college students claimed by Oct 31, 2026; ChatGPT for Education lists them.
