How to Export ChatGPT Data

To download your ChatGPT conversations, go to Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export > Confirm export; OpenAI emails a ZIP file of your chat history within up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours later. Self-service export works on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, not on Business or Enterprise.

To export your ChatGPT data, open Settings > Data controls, select Export under Export data, then Confirm export (OpenAI Help Center). OpenAI sends an email (or a text, for phone-only accounts) when the ZIP file is ready, which can take up to 7 days, and the Download data export link stops working 24 hours after you receive it. The export holds your chat history and other account data. It is a self-service option on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans and some Edu workspaces, as of Nov 6, 2026.

Export on the web

Sign in at chatgpt.com.
Open your profile menu and select Settings.
Select Data controls.
Under Export data, select Export, then Confirm export.

Export on iPhone or Android

iOS: open your account settings, select Data controls > Export data, then Confirm export.
Android: open Settings from your profile menu, select Data controls > Export Data, and confirm.

If the app shows Open ChatGPT on web instead, follow the web steps (OpenAI Help Center).

Download the file

Wait for the email or text from OpenAI. Check spam and promotions folders.
Select Download data export while signed in to the account that asked for it.
Save the ZIP somewhere safe within 24 hours; after that, request a new export.

OpenAI warns that an export can contain sensitive account information, so keep the link and the files private (OpenAI Help Center). A link that will not open on a phone may work on a computer.

What is in the export?

OpenAI's article says only that the ZIP "includes your chat history and other relevant account data". It does not list the files inside, so this page does not either: open the ZIP and check that the conversations you need are there. Two things are known to be missing:

Deleted chats. An export cannot bring back chats you already deleted (OpenAI Help Center).
Scheduled tasks. "Data exports do not include scheduled tasks". Copy a task's instructions by hand, or share it (Scheduled > ••• > Share > Copy link) to keep its title, instructions and schedule.

What the export holds of your memories, Library files, images, projects or Work files is not stated on the pages read for this guide. Images you made stay visible at chatgpt.com/images while the chats that made them exist (OpenAI Help Center), and Library files can be downloaded from the Library itself.

OpenAI's Privacy Portal takes the same request without the app: go to privacy.openai.com, select Make a Privacy Request, choose I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data and follow the prompts (OpenAI Help Center). The ChatGPT app also has a Privacy Center (since Sep 21, 2026), under account menu > Help > Privacy Center on the web.

Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces

Members of ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces cannot export from Settings; OpenAI points them to the workspace owner (OpenAI Help Center). Edu export depends on your role, the workspace's settings and data residency. Moving a personal account into a company workspace? Export first: once the personal workspace is removed, older export links and new requests from it may stop working.

Troubleshooting

Nothing arrived: check spam, promotions and your texts; after 7 days, contact OpenAI Support.
"Already requested": wait for the first request to finish.
Expired link: sign in to the same account and request again.
Locked out: use the Privacy Portal.

Export before you delete

Export is the safety net before deleting chats or the account: both are permanent and OpenAI cannot restore them (OpenAI Help Center). It is also worth doing before you cancel a plan, since OpenAI's cancellation article does not say what becomes of your chats. More controls are on Privacy and Data Controls.
