Study Mode
Study mode makes ChatGPT teach instead of just answering, with questions, step-by-step hints, quizzes and flashcards; it is free on every ChatGPT plan on the web, iOS and Android, and is turned on by typing @study or choosing Study from the + menu.
To turn on study mode, type @study in the ChatGPT message box on the web, or select + and then Study in the app; ChatGPT then guides you to the answer with questions and hints instead of handing it over (OpenAI Help Center, read Nov 6, 2026). It is on every ChatGPT plan, Free included, on the web, iOS and Android, and with every model. Study mode launched on Jul 29, 2025, and in 2026 it gained interactive math and science modules, quizzes and flashcards.

What does study mode do?
Study mode is built to help you "learn the material", not to finish the homework (OpenAI Help Center). It asks what you already know or where you got stuck, explains in layers, works step by step, and checks understanding as it goes, in a Socratic style. Ask it to slow down, simplify, use an analogy or go deeper. It can quiz you one question at a time, say what you got wrong, and suggest what to review.
It reads notes, syllabi, worksheets, slides, textbook pages, PDFs and photos of problems where uploads are available (File Uploads and Library), and with Memory on it can tailor itself to what it knows about you. OpenAI is plain that it can still be wrong, may sometimes give a direct answer, and "does not replace teachers, tutors, or course materials".
How do you turn study mode on and off?
On the web:
- Type @study in the message box, or select + and search for "study". The page chatgpt.com/studymode opens it directly.
- Ask a question or upload your material.
On iOS: select +, then Study (search the menu if it is not shown). On Android: select +, search for Study, and select it (OpenAI Help Center).
To turn it off, remove the Study token from the message box (Backspace on the web, or its × button); in some menus, choosing Study again switches it off. Start a regular chat for it: study mode does not work in temporary chats, Custom GPTs or Projects.
Quizzes and flashcards
Ask for a quiz, practice questions or flashcards on any topic or upload. Interactive quizzes arrived on Aug 14, 2026, and some accounts show a separate Quizzes shortcut (OpenAI Help Center). Flashcards came on Sep 22, 2026, "Available on mobile and web for all ChatGPT plans", and are saved in your library.
Interactive math and science modules
Since Mar 10, 2026, ChatGPT shows interactive learning modules for "70+ math and science topics" to all logged-in users: diagrams and controls to explore how something works. With GPT-6's Intelligent UI, since Oct 7, 2026, answers can also carry interactive diagrams and step-by-step problem solving outside study mode (OpenAI).
Pronunciation help
For language learners, ChatGPT added pronunciation help in 60+ languages on Jun 18, 2026, and tap-to-hear pronunciation with a phonetic breakdown on Aug 31, 2026. These are ChatGPT features in general, not part of the study mode switch.
Study hours for teens and schools
A parent with a linked teen account can set Study hours in Settings > Parental controls: new chats during those times start in study mode, without blocking access (OpenAI Help Center). Quiet hours, which do block use, are a separate setting; see Parental Controls. Some ChatGPT Edu workspaces can require study mode, which hides the Study switch.
