Scheduled Tasks

Scheduled tasks make ChatGPT run a prompt later, on a repeating schedule, while watching for a change, or when a Gmail, Slack or GitHub event happens; Free and Go can keep 3 active tasks, Plus 5, Business and Edu 10, and Pro and Enterprise 15.

To make a scheduled task, ask ChatGPT in any chat to do something at a time or when something changes ("Let me know when my package is delivered"), or open Scheduled in the sidebar and set the schedule there (OpenAI Help Center, read Nov 6, 2026). ChatGPT then runs the task on its own and sends a push notification or email with the result. Each plan has a cap on active tasks: 3 on Free and Go, 5 on Plus, 10 on Business and Edu, 15 on Pro and Enterprise, as of Nov 6, 2026. Tasks began as a beta on Jan 14, 2025 and were rebuilt on Jun 17, 2026, when they also took over from ChatGPT Pulse.

How do you create a scheduled task in ChatGPT?

  1. In a regular chat, ask for what should happen and when, for example a daily news briefing at 8 a.m. or a note when a package arrives.
  2. ChatGPT confirms the task; monitoring tasks get a label such as "Package Delivery Watch" (OpenAI Help Center).
  3. Turn on notifications at Settings > Notifications (Push, Email or both). Mobile push needs the task to be made in the ChatGPT app with notifications allowed.

The other way in is the Scheduled page: open it from the sidebar and set the schedule there. Availability of that page depends on the account, app and app version.

To edit, pause or delete a task, select its title in its chat and use the task panel, or find it on Scheduled. From inside a chat, ••• > See scheduled tasks lists them (OpenAI Help Center).

A task can also use a skill. In OpenAI's ChatGPT Work video, a weekday meeting-prep task is pointed at a meeting prep skill so each brief comes out in the same format; in the video's words, "A skill remembers how I like the work done", while the task decides when it runs.

Monitoring tasks

A monitoring task checks something again and again and speaks only when there is news. It can use what it found on earlier runs and stop by itself once a set end condition is met (OpenAI Help Center). Monitoring came with the Jun 17, 2026 rebuild.

Event-triggered tasks (webhooks)

Since Aug 25, 2026, a task can start when something happens in a connected app instead of at a time. These run in ChatGPT Work, not in Chat (OpenAI Help Center):

  1. Connect a Gmail, Slack or GitHub account in Settings > Apps.
  2. Open Work and describe the event and what ChatGPT should do.
  3. Check the Trigger, Condition and Prompt it proposes, and finish any authorization.
  4. Manage it later from Scheduled.

Gmail tasks fire on new messages, optionally filtered by sender or subject; Slack tasks on new channel messages (add @ChatGPT to each channel); GitHub tasks on pull request activity in an authorized repository. All of a user's event tasks together may run 30 times an hour and 720 times a day. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and ChatGPT for Healthcare can make them; Free and Go cannot, and FedRAMP workspaces do not have them. Installing a plugin never creates one by itself.

Limits by plan

Free 3 Once a day, in a time window
Go 3 Not stated
Plus 5 Once an hour, exact times
Business, Edu 10 Once an hour, exact times
Pro, Enterprise 15 Once an hour, exact times

OpenAI's own pages disagree on Free: the help article and the Aug 25, 2026 release note give Free up to three active tasks, while the comparison table on the pricing page still marks scheduled tasks "No" for Free (ChatGPT pricing, read Nov 6, 2026).

Tasks cost usage: a task that runs in Chat "can use your plan's usage allowance or workspace credits even when it does not post an update" (OpenAI Help Center). Pausing tasks or running them less often saves it. Inactive tasks may pause by themselves.

Sharing a task

A task can be shared as a recipe: Scheduled > ••• on the task > Share > Copy link (OpenAI Help Center). The link holds the title, instructions, schedule and original time zone, never the owner's name, chats, results, memories, files or app data, and the person who opens it schedules a separate copy with their own account. Links begin https://chatgpt.com/s/ (OpenAI Help Center). See Sharing Chats.

OpenAI's demo of scheduled tasks in the desktop app shows another way to hand one to a team: a weekly feedback-triage task that runs on the presenter's laptop is turned into a Workspace Agent in the cloud by asking ChatGPT, and the team then uses it from ChatGPT or in Slack.

What tasks cannot do

Tasks do not run in voice chats, Custom GPTs or locked chats; a chat with a task (even a paused one) must lose the task before it can be locked. A task made inside a project cannot read that project's files. Data exports leave scheduled tasks out (OpenAI Help Center). Codex has its own automations, separate from these.

Pulse moved into tasks

ChatGPT Pulse, the Pro-only morning briefing, absorbed tasks on Dec 17, 2025 ("Tasks are now in Pulse"). The Jun 17, 2026 rebuild reversed that: Pulse was sunset, Pro users kept it 14 more days, and OpenAI's advice was to schedule a daily briefing as a task instead. Connecting Finances may add a "Weekly finances update" task (OpenAI Help Center).

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT send me reminders? Yes. Ask in a chat ("remind me every Monday at 9 to send the report") and ChatGPT creates a scheduled task that notifies you by push or email.

Are scheduled tasks free in ChatGPT? Free accounts can keep 3 active tasks, run at most once a day in a time window, as of Nov 6, 2026. Paid plans get 5 to 15 tasks and hourly, exact-time schedules.

How many scheduled tasks can I have in ChatGPT? 3 on Free and Go, 5 on Plus, 10 on Business and Edu, and 15 on Pro and Enterprise, counting active tasks only.

Where do I find my ChatGPT tasks? On the Scheduled page in the sidebar, or under Settings > Notifications > Manage tasks.

What replaced ChatGPT Pulse? Scheduled tasks. Pulse was sunset on Jun 17, 2026 with 14 days of grace for Pro users; a daily briefing task does the same job.
