Is ChatGPT Safe

ChatGPT is safe to use with care: it can state false things confidently, it trains on personal-plan chats unless you opt out, and it is not a doctor or lawyer, but it offers privacy controls, account security and parental controls.

ChatGPT is safe to use if you treat its answers as a first draft and set its privacy controls yourself. The real risks are three: it can be wrong while sounding sure, it may use your chats for training on Free, Go, Plus and Pro unless you turn that off, and anything you share in a link or connect to it reaches more places than you might think. OpenAI's own terms say "Output may not always be accurate" and should not replace professional advice (Terms of Use, effective Jan 1, 2026). Below, each risk and what to do about it, as of Nov 6, 2026.

Is ChatGPT accurate?

Often, but not reliably. OpenAI's help article "Does ChatGPT tell the truth?" says its answers can be incorrect or misleading and may sound confident when wrong. It calls these errors hallucinations: wrong dates or facts, invented quotes or studies, fake references, and overconfident answers to hard questions (Does ChatGPT tell the truth?). The reasons it gives: the model's knowledge stops at a cutoff, it may be blocked from some websites, it can oversimplify or present one view as settled, and it cannot reliably tell whether a text was written by AI.

What helps:

  • Turn on search or Deep Research for anything current; answers then cite web sources you can open.
  • Open the cited links yourself and check quotes, numbers and references.
  • Do not use ChatGPT's verdict on whether an essay was AI-written as evidence of anything.
  • For high-stakes work, ask a second source, human or not. See When to Use Something Else.

As a starting point, yes; as the final word, no. The terms say output should not replace professional advice (Terms of Use). Health in ChatGPT, for US adults, can read connected medical records, but OpenAI says it is not for diagnosis or treatment, and that those records are not used for training or ads (Health in ChatGPT). Finances in ChatGPT can show spending and a credit score but cannot move money, pay bills, make trades or file taxes (Finances in ChatGPT).

Is ChatGPT private?

Your chats are not public unless you share them, but they are not private from OpenAI. On personal plans, chats may be used to train models until you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings > Data controls; rating a response with a thumb can still let that whole chat be used (Data controls in ChatGPT). Business, Enterprise and Edu content is not used for training by default. Saved chats are kept until you delete them, and deleted ones are removed within 30 days (Deleting and archiving chats).

Courts can reach that data too. In 2025 a preservation order in The New York Times' lawsuit made OpenAI keep consumer chats indefinitely; OpenAI says the order ended on Sep 26, 2025 but that it still holds some April to September 2025 data the Times is seeking (OpenAI, update of Oct 22, 2025).

Practical rules: do not paste passwords, ID numbers or other people's private data; use a Temporary Chat for anything sensitive; and treat shared links as public. In 2025, shared chats that users had marked discoverable showed up in Google until OpenAI removed the option on Jul 31, 2025 (TechCrunch, Jul 31, 2025). The full list of settings is in Privacy and Data Controls.

Can ChatGPT be tricked into leaking data?

It can, and OpenAI says so. When ChatGPT browses the web or reads files and connected apps, hidden instructions in that content, called prompt injection, may try to steer it. Lockdown Mode (Settings > Security) restricts browsing to cached pages and turns off Agent Mode and Deep Research to reduce the risk, but OpenAI notes it "does not guarantee" data cannot be exfiltrated and does not stop injections from influencing answers (Lockdown Mode). Give Plugins the least access you need: their permission choices run from "Always ask" to "Allow all actions" (Connected apps in ChatGPT), and ChatGPT Work's browser asks for confirmation before consequential actions such as a reservation or a payment (ChatGPT release notes, Aug 25, 2026).

Is your ChatGPT account safe?

Only as safe as its sign-in. Turn on multi-factor authentication or a passkey, check Active sessions and Security history now and then, and consider Advanced Account Security, which drops password sign-in altogether (Advanced Account Security). Details and steps: Account Security.

Fake ChatGPT apps and scams

No OpenAI page read on Nov 6, 2026 lists known scams, so this section sticks to what is official. ChatGPT's desktop apps download from chatgpt.com/download; on a phone, install only the ChatGPT app whose listed publisher is OpenAI. ChatGPT's own phone and WhatsApp number is 1-800-CHATGPT (+1-800-242-8478), which OpenAI calls "verified" on WhatsApp, and OpenAI's support line is 1-888-GPT-0090 (1-800-ChatGPT; OpenAI Help Over Phone). Plans are bought at chatgpt.com or in the official apps (ChatGPT Plans and Pricing). Anything else claiming to be ChatGPT, and asking for a payment or your password, deserves suspicion. See also ChatGPT in Other Apps.

ChatGPT can also help check a message that might be a scam. In an OpenAI Academy video, the presenter copies a suspicious text into ChatGPT without opening its link or calling its number, asks for the warning signs and a safe way to verify, and then checks through the bank's own app or the delivery company's own website rather than anything in the message.

Is ChatGPT safe for kids?

Not for children under 13: OpenAI's terms set 13 as the minimum and require a parent's permission under 18 (Terms of Use). For teens, OpenAI predicts age from usage signals and applies a teen experience with no ads, and parents can link accounts to set quiet hours, turn off voice, images or memory and get safety notifications, without reading chats (Managing parental controls; Age prediction). Full details: Parental Controls.

Mental health

ChatGPT is not a therapist or a crisis service. Adults can name a trusted contact who may be alerted, without chat details, if reviewers find a serious safety concern about suicide; OpenAI says this is no substitute for emergency services or care. In a crisis, call local emergency services or a crisis line.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT safe to use? Yes, with care: check its facts, turn off training in Settings > Data controls if you want, avoid pasting sensitive data, and secure your account with MFA or a passkey.

Can ChatGPT give wrong answers? Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT can hallucinate, giving wrong facts, invented quotes and fake references while sounding confident, so verify anything important.

Does ChatGPT keep what I type? ChatGPT keeps saved chats until you delete them, deletes removed chats within 30 days, and on personal plans may use chats for training unless you opt out.

Can other people see my ChatGPT chats? No, unless you create a shared link, which anyone holding it can open; parents with linked teen accounts cannot see their teens' chats.

Is it safe to give ChatGPT personal information? Share as little as you need. Use Temporary Chat for sensitive topics, never paste passwords, and remember personal-plan chats may be used for training by default.

Is the ChatGPT app safe to download? The official ChatGPT apps come from OpenAI: download the desktop app from chatgpt.com/download, and on a phone install only the listing whose publisher is OpenAI.
