Health in ChatGPT

Health in ChatGPT connects your medical records, Apple Health and apps such as One Medical and Function Health so ChatGPT can explain results and track changes; it is free for logged-in adults in the US on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, on the web and iOS, and its health data is never used to train models or target ads.

To use Health in ChatGPT, open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar (it may sit under More), select Connect Health or Get started, and link Apple Health, your medical records or another supported source (OpenAI Help Center, read Nov 6, 2026). ChatGPT can then explain lab results, compare them with earlier tests and help you prepare for appointments. Health is for eligible, logged-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users in the US, on the web and iOS, as of Nov 6, 2026; OpenAI says it is "not intended for diagnosis or treatment". It began as a waitlist on Jan 7, 2026 and opened to US adults on Jul 23, 2026.

How do you connect medical records to ChatGPT?

  1. Open Health from the sidebar; you may need to select More first (OpenAI Help Center).
  2. Select Connect Health or Get started.
  3. Choose Apple Health, Medical Records or another supported source, and finish its sign-in and permission steps.
  4. Wait for the sync, which can take minutes or longer for a long history.
  5. Check or add current conditions, medications and family history.
  6. Ask questions anywhere in ChatGPT; add "@Health" to a message to make it use your health data.

More accounts are added at Health > Accounts > Add account, and Apple Health categories at Health > ••• > Apple Health. Wearables and apps such as WHOOP, Oura and Garmin, and Strava or MyFitnessPal, come in through Apple Health, each set to share with it; some brand-specific scores may not carry over.

What can ChatGPT do with health data?

OpenAI lists comparing new results with earlier tests, summarizing what changed since the last appointment, exploring how sleep, activity and workouts relate, explaining recent labs, drafting questions for a doctor, and finding restaurants that suit an allergy (OpenAI Help Center). It can send updates when new records sync or a trend appears in Apple Health data. Since Sep 28, 2026, selecting a chart, metric or record in the Health tab explains it without a prompt.

ChatGPT cannot write to Apple Health or change provider records; edits to conditions or medications change only your Health profile in ChatGPT. Health is designed "to support, not replace, medical care", and for urgent symptoms OpenAI says to get professional help at once.

Privacy

"Connected medical records and Apple Health information, and conversations that use it, are not used to train our foundation models or target ads, regardless of the model-training setting" (OpenAI Help Center). Other chats follow the usual setting in Settings > Data Controls (Privacy and Data Controls). OpenAI says all chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, with extra protection for health data, and that further checks run before health information is passed to another plugin. Files from Health are not saved to Library (OpenAI Help Center).

With Memory on, Health chats can create memories (not from the synced data itself). To avoid that, use a Temporary Chat, turn memory off in Settings > Personalization, or keep health questions in a project with project-only memory.

Health is not HIPAA-eligible, offers no Business Associate Agreement, and is not meant for clinics or covered entities (OpenAI Help Center).

Permissions

Health's permissions are at Settings > Plugins > Health: Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, or Allow all actions (marked elevated risk). New Health connections have defaulted to "Allow low-risk actions" since Sep 14, 2026, when OpenAI said "more than 70% of Health users already choose to allow" it. See Plugins.

How do you disconnect and delete health data?

  • Medical records: Health > Accounts > ••• > Remove account.
  • Apple Health: Health > ••• > Apple Health > Disconnect.

Synced data is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days; what is already in chats stays until those chats are deleted (OpenAI Help Center).

Regions and teens

Health is US-only as of Nov 6, 2026. The Jan 7, 2026 waitlist version was offered outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK (release notes); the current one is limited to the US. A parent with a linked teen account can turn Health off, which removes the connection and deletes synced data (Parental Controls). Chats from the earlier Health version sit in a "Health Project" under Projects and do not move to the new tab.

ChatGPT for Clinicians

Doctors and other providers have their own product: ChatGPT for Clinicians, launched Apr 22, 2026 as "a free version of ChatGPT for verified clinicians in the United States", a separate workspace with CME credits. On Sep 1, 2026 it gained the Healthcare Public Data plugin of nine apps. Hospitals and covered entities use ChatGPT for Healthcare (OpenAI Help Center).
