Search and quick answers

No reliable comparison yet. No dated 2026 hands-on test of ChatGPT against Perplexity could be found from a reputable outlet as of Nov 6, 2026 (Tom's Guide's face-off series, for one, had none), and no leaderboard measures search answers. Perplexity's own models do not appear among the first 153 rows of Arena's text leaderboard (Oct 27, 2026), which makes sense for a product that mostly runs other makers' models.

What differs is access. ChatGPT Search is on every ChatGPT plan and for people not signed in, it can use your location if you allow it, and websites appear in it by allowing OpenAI's search crawler. Perplexity's free plan limits its stronger Pro Search to 3 a day, and its paid plans describe their caps only as "average use" and "advanced use", with no numbers.

Deep research

On a free account ChatGPT gives more: its Deep Research is limited but included on Free, with a counter in the app that shows how many tasks are left, and Perplexity Free allows 1 Research a month. At work scale, Perplexity is the one that publishes numbers: Enterprise Pro includes 50 Research a month and Enterprise Max 500. No test compares the quality of the reports.

Models and writing

ChatGPT runs OpenAI's own models, GPT-6 Sol for paid plans' Instant to Extra High modes and GPT-6 Astra for Pro reasoning. Perplexity Max promises faster access to new models "from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others", but Perplexity's own page listing its Pro models was clearly out of date on Nov 6, 2026 (it still named GPT-5.2 and Claude Sonnet 4.6), so its current model menu could not be confirmed. Without that, there is no reliable comparison of writing quality.

Agents, apps and coding

Both now sell an agent that works on longer tasks. ChatGPT's is ChatGPT Work, included on paid plans and in limited form on Free on desktop, and its Codex coding agent is on every plan. Perplexity's is Perplexity Computer, paid in credits: Max includes 10,000 credits a month plus a 35,000 bonus, and Perplexity estimates a research report at 350 to 950 credits and an app at 15,000 or more. Pro has weekly included Computer use instead of monthly credits. For writing code, ChatGPT is the documented choice.

Images and voice

ChatGPT makes images on every plan with ChatGPT Images 2.6 and offers Live voice, 3 hours a day on Plus. The Perplexity Help Center pages read on Nov 6, 2026 do not describe image generation or voice limits, so ChatGPT wins images on the evidence and voice stays unsettled. Price

ChatGPT's prices are easy to confirm: Go $8 a month, Plus $20, Pro $100, $200 or $500. Perplexity Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year, the yearly option on the web only. The Perplexity Help Center page on plans read on Nov 6, 2026 gives no price for Pro; reports put it at $20 a month, but that could not be confirmed on a Perplexity page. Privacy

Both let you stop training on your data. ChatGPT: turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data controls; it is on by default for personal plans. Choose Perplexity if you mainly want sourced answers to search questions, want a free AI browser, or want several makers' models behind one subscription.
