ChatGPT Atlas
ChatGPT Atlas was OpenAI's web browser with ChatGPT built in, launched on macOS on Oct 21, 2025. OpenAI deprecated it on Jul 9, 2026 and it stopped working on Aug 9, 2026; the ChatGPT desktop app's built-in browser and the ChatGPT browser extension replaced it.
ChatGPT Atlas is discontinued: it stopped working on Aug 9, 2026, a month after OpenAI announced on Jul 9 that it was "deprecating Atlas as we bring browser-based agentic capabilities into ChatGPT and Codex". Atlas was "a new web browser built with ChatGPT at its core", launched on macOS on Oct 21, 2025, with optional browser memories and an agent that could act on web pages. Its jobs now belong to the browser built into the ChatGPT Desktop App and the ChatGPT Browser Extension for Chrome and other browsers.

What did ChatGPT Atlas do?
OpenAI built Atlas around ChatGPT rather than adding ChatGPT to an existing browser (OpenAI):
- ChatGPT built in: the browser and ChatGPT came as one app rather than an add-on.
- Agent mode: in preview for Plus, Pro and Business users at launch, ChatGPT could carry out tasks in the browser. It could not run code in the browser, download files or install extensions.
- Browser memories: "completely optional", viewable and archivable in settings, and deleted along with the browsing history they came from. A toggle in the address bar hid a site from ChatGPT. Atlas's browser memories were kept separate from ChatGPT's own Memory (OpenAI Help Center).
- Training: browsed content was not used to train models unless a user turned on "include web browsing" in data controls.
- Parental controls: parents could turn off browser memories and agent mode.
Later additions included ChatGPT Pulse for Pro users in Atlas on Oct 29, 2025 and pinned chats on Dec 18, 2025. Users who made Atlas their default browser got temporarily higher rate limits, which applied only in Atlas and for up to seven consecutive days (OpenAI Help Center).
Did Atlas come to Windows or phones?
OpenAI's launch post said experiences for Windows, iOS and Android were "coming soon" (OpenAI). No OpenAI page read for this article says whether any of them shipped before Atlas was retired.
Why was Atlas retired, and what happened to my data?
OpenAI's Jul 9, 2026 note gave one reason: browser-based agent features were moving into ChatGPT and Codex themselves. The same day it released the new ChatGPT Desktop App, which holds Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex and has its own browser (OpenAI Help Center).
Before Aug 9, 2026 users could:
- Export cookies and passwords from Atlas to the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Export bookmarks to Chrome.
Browsing history and open tabs did not transfer (OpenAI Help Center).
What to use instead of ChatGPT Atlas
- The ChatGPT desktop app (macOS, Windows and a Linux preview): its built-in browser lets Work and Codex use websites, including some that need a sign-in on Plus and Pro, and on Aug 31, 2026 gained website tools (WebMCP) (OpenAI Help Center).
- The ChatGPT browser extension: for Chrome, and since Aug 31, 2026 also Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi; it lets ChatGPT read tabs you mention and do browser tasks started from the desktop app. Side chat works in Edge, Brave and Vivaldi, not Opera (OpenAI Help Center).
- Other AI browsers: Perplexity's Comet, Gemini in Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Dia, compared on ChatGPT Atlas vs Other AI Browsers.
