Retired ChatGPT Models
Every model OpenAI removed from ChatGPT, with dates: GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, o4-mini and GPT-5 on Feb 13, 2026, GPT-5.1 on Mar 11, GPT-5.2 on Jun 12, GPT-4.5 on Jun 26, o3 on Aug 26 and GPT-5.5 on Oct 14, 2026. Models generally stay 90 days after a successor arrives.
OpenAI removed every model older than GPT-5.6 from ChatGPT during 2026: GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, o4-mini and GPT-5 on Feb 13, 2026, GPT-5.1 on Mar 11, GPT-5.2 on Jun 12, GPT-4.5 on Jun 26, o3 on Aug 26 and GPT-5.5 on Oct 14, 2026. OpenAI's rule of thumb: "Models will generally remain available in ChatGPT for 90 days after a successor is released." Old conversations stay readable and continue on a current model. Most retired models stay longer in the OpenAI API, which has its own shutdown dates.

The successor column follows OpenAI's notes where they name one; where they do not, it gives the model that was current at the time.
Before 2026, o3-pro replaced o1-pro on Jun 10, 2025, and GPT-5 replaced GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.5 as the default on Aug 7, 2025, though some stayed selectable until the dates above. For the full sequence, see GPT Model History.
Other retirements inside ChatGPT
- Codex with ChatGPT sign-in: GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini on Aug 31, 2026 (replaced by GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna), GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark on Sep 14, 2026, and GPT-5.5 on Oct 14, 2026 at 19:00 UTC. API-key sessions are not affected. See Codex Models.
- The DALL-E GPT: the official DALL-E custom GPT retired on Aug 30, 2026. See DALL-E.
- Custom GPTs themselves retire on Dec 11, 2026. See Custom GPTs.
Retired from ChatGPT is not retired from the API
OpenAI's notices for the February retirements said plainly there was no change to the API. The API keeps its own timetable (OpenAI API docs):
| API models | Shutdown | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-4.5-preview | Jul 14, 2025 | gpt-4.1 |
| GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, gpt-3.5-turbo, gpt-4.1-nano, o1, o1-pro, o3-mini, o4-mini | Oct 23, 2026 | Not named in the summary read |
| gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, gpt-5-nano, gpt-5-pro, o3, o3-pro | Dec 11, 2026 | gpt-5.6-sol, terra or luna |
| gpt-4o, gpt-4o-mini, gpt-4.1, gpt-4.1-mini | Jan 14, 2027 | gpt-6-luna |
| gpt-5.1, gpt-5.3-codex, gpt-5.4-nano | Apr 1, 2027 | gpt-6-sol (nano: gpt-6-luna) |

GPT-5.5 is still sold in the API ($5 / $30 per 1M tokens) even though it left ChatGPT. If a model you rely on in ChatGPT is going away, the API is the only way to keep using it, for as long as it lasts there.
Frequently asked questions
Where did GPT-4o go? OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT on Feb 13, 2026, and from custom GPTs in Business, Enterprise and Edu after Apr 3, 2026. It stays in the API until Jan 14, 2027.
Where did GPT-4.5 go? GPT-4.5 left ChatGPT on Jun 26, 2026 after a 30-day notice (one OpenAI page says Jun 27), and conversations continued on GPT-5.5. Its API preview had already shut down on Jul 14, 2025.
Can I get a retired model back in ChatGPT? No. Once OpenAI retires a model from ChatGPT there is no setting to restore it, though OpenAI did bring GPT-4o back once, after the GPT-5 launch in August 2025, following user feedback. Some retired models remain in the API for a while.
How long does OpenAI keep old models in ChatGPT? OpenAI says models generally remain for 90 days after a successor is released. Paid plans have kept some older models under Legacy models or model configuration for about three months.
What happens to my old chats with a retired model? They stay in your history, and if you continue one, ChatGPT answers with a current model.

OpenAI APIThe OpenAI API lets programs call OpenAI's models (GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra, GPT-6 Luna, image, voice and transcription models) with an API key, billed per token. New projects use the Responses API through the official SDKs, with documentation at developers.openai.com.

GPT Model HistoryOpenAI's GPT models run from GPT-1 (Jun 11, 2018) through GPT-2 (1.5 billion parameters, 2019), GPT-3 (175 billion, 2020), GPT-4 (2023), GPT-4o (2024), GPT-5 (Aug 7, 2025) and the GPT-5.x updates to GPT-6 Astra (Sep 3, 2026) and its siblings.
-
Codex ModelsAs of Nov 6, 2026 Codex recommends four models: GPT-6 Astra (most capable), GPT-6.1 Sol (the default, near Astra at lower cost), GPT-6.1 Terra (fast, for writing and computer use) and GPT-6 Luna (most efficient). They replaced a line of coding-tuned models that ran from codex-1 in 2025 through GPT-5-Codex, GPT-5.1-Codex-Max and GPT-5.3-Codex.
- DALL-EDALL-E was OpenAI's text-to-image model line: DALL-E (Jan 2021), DALL-E 2 (2022) and DALL-E 3 (2023, built into ChatGPT). GPT-4o image generation replaced it in ChatGPT in March 2025, the API models shut down on May 12, 2026, and the DALL-E GPT retired on Aug 30, 2026.
