What is GPT-6.1 Terra for?
OpenAI pitches Terra at three jobs: understanding images and screens, operating a computer through clicks and typing, and writing plain, natural prose. In the Codex docs it is "A fast, efficient model for clear writing, visual understanding, and computer use". Unlike GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, it accepts the reasoning effort none, so it can answer without thinking first, which suits quick, high-volume calls.
How fast and how good is it?
At launch OpenAI claimed Terra is on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth its token price and finishes tasks more than three times faster than Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, as BleepingComputer reported on Oct 26, 2026. OpenAI's figures there: 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra, and an internal error rate at low effort of 16.7% against 53.6%. All are OpenAI's own numbers.
Independent, dated measurements put Terra a step below Sol:
- Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (v5, read Nov 6, 2026): GPT-6.1 Terra (max) 51, against 55 for GPT-6.1 Sol and 57 for Astra, at $0.96 per index task and 13.7 minutes, the quickest of the three.
- LMArena WebDev (Oct 27, 2026): 14th, 1673.
- LMArena agents (read Nov 6, 2026): 7th, 11.40%, behind Astra and 6.1 Sol.
- LMArena Text: not in the visible top 153 as read on Nov 6, 2026.
Nothing published and dated yet settles OpenAI's "on par with Astra" claim; the index above says it is not. See OpenAI Benchmarks.
How much Terra do ChatGPT plans include?
OpenAI estimates 35 to 285 local Terra messages per five hours in Work and Codex for Plus and Business Standard, about twice GPT-6.1 Sol's range, and says "Your plan's overall usage limits are unchanged" by its arrival (release notes). With ChatGPT Credits it costs 25 credits per million input tokens, 1.25 cached and 125 output. OpenAI's safety notes for it are an addendum to the Astra system card, dated Oct 26, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How much does GPT-6.1 Terra cost? GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 cached and $5 per million output tokens in the OpenAI API, as of Nov 6, 2026. That is half the price of GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-5.6 Terra.
Can I use GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT? Yes, in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. It is not in the Chat tab, and Free and Go plans do not get it.
Is GPT-6.1 Terra better than GPT-6.1 Sol? No by most measures: Artificial Analysis scores it 51 against Sol's 55. It is faster and half the price, and OpenAI recommends it for writing, image understanding and computer use.
