Who owns OpenAI?
No single owner. OpenAI's own structure page describes two layers (OpenAI):
- The OpenAI Foundation, a nonprofit, controls OpenAI Group and appoints its board. It holds ordinary equity, so it gains as the company's value rises.
- OpenAI Group PBC, the for-profit company that runs the products. As a public benefit corporation it must advance its stated mission and weigh the interests of all stakeholders, not shareholders alone.
At the recapitalization the stakes were the Foundation 26% (plus a warrant), Microsoft about 27% and employees and investors 47% (TechCrunch). The attorneys general of California and Delaware allowed the change under conditions. Later funding rounds will have changed these percentages; no page read for this article gives the current split.
Leadership and board
Sam Altman is CEO, and he sits on the Foundation's board with independent directors Bret Taylor (chair), Adam D'Angelo, Paul Christiano, Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Zico Kolter, retired General Paul M. Nakasone, Adebayo Ogunlesi, Nicole Seligman, David Vélez and Robin Vince, as OpenAI's structure page lists them, read Nov 6, 2026 (OpenAI). Sarah Friar is chief financial officer (CNBC). Altman was briefly removed by the previous board in November 2023, a story told on History of OpenAI.
Microsoft and the other cloud partners
Microsoft has backed OpenAI since 2019 and had invested more than $13 billion by late 2025, per CNBC. The Oct 28, 2025 agreement gave Microsoft model and product IP rights through 2032, required an independent expert panel to verify any declaration of artificial general intelligence, committed OpenAI to an extra $250 billion of Azure and ended Microsoft's right of first refusal on compute (Microsoft).
OpenAI is no longer an Azure-only company. Its models reached Amazon Bedrock on Jun 1, 2026, and Amazon committed up to $50 billion in the 2026 round (CNBC). No page read for this article states the revised Microsoft terms that allowed this.
Funding and valuation
On Mar 31, 2026 OpenAI closed $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation, up from $110 billion announced in February. Amazon committed up to $50 billion, Nvidia $30 billion and SoftBank $30 billion; SoftBank co-led with Andreessen Horowitz and D. E. Shaw Ventures, and about $12 billion came from a broader pool including $3 billion from individuals. OpenAI then reported $2 billion of revenue a month and $13.1 billion the year before. A later report of a round at a $1.25 trillion target could not be confirmed from a reputable source.
CNBC reported on Sep 3, 2026 that OpenAI's enterprise business now earns more than its consumer business, and that Friar told staff OpenAI "will be a public company in 2027". Its advertising in ChatGPT reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, OpenAI said on Aug 31, 2026; see Ads in ChatGPT.
Compute: Stargate
Stargate is OpenAI's data center venture with Oracle and SoftBank, announced at the White House on Jan 21, 2025 with $100 billion to start and up to $500 billion over four years, beginning in Texas, with SoftBank's Masayoshi Son as chairman. Arm, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle and OpenAI were the first technology partners. No page read for this article gives Stargate's built capacity as of Nov 6, 2026.
