ChatGPT Atlas vs Other AI Browsers

ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's AI browser, stopped working on Aug 9, 2026; ChatGPT's browsing now lives in the desktop app's built-in browser and the ChatGPT browser extension, and the AI browsers still sold are Perplexity's Comet (free), Gemini in Chrome, Edge with Copilot, Dia and Claude in Chrome.

ChatGPT Atlas no longer exists: OpenAI announced on Jul 9, 2026 that it was deprecating Atlas, which stopped working on Aug 9, 2026, and moved its browsing agent into the ChatGPT Desktop App's built-in browser and the ChatGPT Browser Extension. Anyone who used Atlas now has two OpenAI options and several rivals. Perplexity's Comet is the closest like-for-like replacement, a full AI browser that is free for everyone; Google's Gemini in Chrome adds an agent to the browser most people already have, for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US first. No published test compares these browsers' agents, so the verdicts below rest on price, access and what each maker documents. Learn more: https://ai.vi.ki/best-ai-browser.

What Atlas was and what replaced it

Atlas was a ChatGPT-centered browser for macOS with an "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar, optional browser memories and an agent mode, in preview for Plus, Pro and Business, that could research, automate tasks and book appointments while it browsed; it could not run code, download files or install extensions. Pulse came to Atlas for Pro users on Oct 29, 2025.

When it was retired, cookies and passwords could be exported to the ChatGPT desktop app and bookmarks to Chrome, but history and open tabs did not move (release notes, Jul 9, 2026). Atlas's browser memories were separate from ChatGPT memories. Today OpenAI's browsing comes two ways:

  1. The desktop app's built-in browser, where ChatGPT Work and Codex browse with permission; since Aug 31, 2026 it also shows the website tools a page provides (select the arrow in the address bar).
  2. The ChatGPT browser extension in your own browser: mention open tabs as context, chat beside the page, or ask the desktop app to do a task in the browser. Side chat works in Edge, Brave and Vivaldi; Opera supports tab mentions and browser control but not side chat (setup).

For agent tasks in general, see Agent Mode and How to Use ChatGPT Agent Mode.

Perplexity Comet

Comet is a full browser for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, free since Perplexity's worldwide release in October 2025. Its agent, Comet Assistant, is not on the free plan; paid plans get capped use, Enterprise Pro 80 tasks a month and Enterprise Max 800. Perplexity Max at $200 a month gets "Max Assistant on Comet" with the highest weekly limit. Comet is the pick for anyone who wants what Atlas was, a browser built around an assistant. Perplexity's chat service is compared on ChatGPT vs Perplexity.

Gemini in Chrome

Gemini is built into Chrome on Windows, macOS, Chromebook Plus, Android and iOS for adults. Its agent, auto browse, carries out multi-step tasks such as booking an appointment and is a preview, first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US; Google's plans list it on AI Pro at $19.99 a month and with the most access on Ultra. It suits anyone who wants to stay in Chrome and already pays for Google AI. See ChatGPT vs Gemini.

Microsoft Edge with Copilot

Microsoft's Edge page describes Journeys, reasoning across several tabs, YouTube summaries, history search and a Copilot sidepane; Edge users "may get a higher free allowance", and higher limits need Microsoft 365. The page read on Nov 6, 2026 no longer uses the name "Copilot Mode". The ChatGPT extension also runs in Edge, so the two can sit side by side. See ChatGPT vs Copilot.

Dia and Claude in Chrome

Dia, from The Browser Company of New York, is a free browser for macOS and Windows that answers across Slack, Notion, Teams, Google Workspace and open tabs, with a Morning Brief and a "Dia for Work" edition; it names no models and no paid tier. Anthropic's Claude in Chrome is an extension on Claude Pro and above, not Free; see ChatGPT vs Claude.

Which should you use?

For a browser built around an assistant, as Atlas was, use Comet. To keep Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi and add ChatGPT, use the ChatGPT browser extension; for agent tasks without a paid plan, use the built-in browser of the ChatGPT desktop app. Google AI subscribers in the US can use Gemini's auto browse in Chrome, Microsoft 365 users Edge's Copilot, and Claude subscribers Claude in Chrome.
