OpenAI API Pricing

OpenAI API prices are per 1M tokens: GPT-6 Astra costs $10 input and $50 output, GPT-6.1 Sol $2 and $10, GPT-6.1 Terra $1 and $5, and GPT-6 Luna $0.10 and $0.50, as of Nov 6, 2026. Batch and Flex halve those prices, Fast doubles them.

OpenAI's API is billed per million tokens, and as of Nov 6, 2026 the four flagship models cost $10 input and $50 output for GPT-6 Astra, $2 and $10 for GPT-6.1 Sol, $1 and $5 for GPT-6.1 Terra, and $0.10 and $0.50 for GPT-6 Luna. Cached input is far cheaper, the Batch API and Flex processing cut every price in half, Fast mode doubles it, and prompts longer than 272K tokens pay long-context rates. All prices below are US dollars from OpenAI's developer pricing page, read Nov 6, 2026; they change often, so check the date before you budget. For what the API is and how to start, see OpenAI API.

Data residency +10% for models released on or after Mar 5, 2026

How much does GPT-6 cost in the API?

The flagship table below is the Standard tier. "Short" means up to 272K input tokens; "long" is anything over. Cache writes are charged when a prompt prefix is first stored, at 1.25x input for the default 30-minute cache and 2.5x for the 12-hour cache (prompt caching guide).

Model Input Cached input Output 30m cache write 12h cache write Long context (in / cached / out)
gpt-6-astra $10.00 $1.00 $50.00 $12.50 $25.00 $20.00 / $2.00 / $75.00

The GPT-6 generation cut prices sharply: GPT-6 Sol and Luna cost half of GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna, and GPT-6.1 Terra is half of GPT-5.6 Terra on input (pricing). GPT-5.6 Sol carries promotional pricing that the pricing page says runs to Nov 30, 2026, while the Fast mode guide says "at least through November 21, 2026"; the two OpenAI pages disagree (pricing, Fast mode).

Batch, Flex, Fast and Ultrafast

The same model costs different amounts depending on how quickly you need the answer (pricing):

Batch jobs finish within 24 hours; Flex is an ordinary call that may be slow or refused with a 429 when capacity is short (Flex guide). Fast replaced Priority processing on Jul 30, 2026 and promises "up to 2.5x faster speeds" for GPT-5.6 Sol, with no latency SLA for Astra (Fast mode guide). OpenAI's Sep 29, 2026 Ultrafast video says it generates GPT-6 Astra's tokens over seven times faster than Standard and over four times faster than Fast in the API. Ultrafast long context costs $120 / $12 / $450 for Astra and $24 / $1.20 / $90 for Sol. Details and when to use each: Batch API.

Tools, embeddings and storage

  • Web search: $10.00 per 1,000 calls plus the search content tokens at the model's rates. The older web search preview on non-reasoning models is $25.00 per 1,000 calls with content tokens free.
  • File search: $2.50 per 1,000 calls (Responses API only), and storage at $0.10 per GB per day after 1 GB free.
  • Containers (Hosted Shell and Code Interpreter): $0.03 for 1 GB, $0.12 for 4 GB, $0.48 for 16 GB, $1.92 for 64 GB per 20-minute session, billed by the minute with a 5-minute minimum.
  • Computer use: the pricing page lists no separate price as of Nov 6, 2026.
  • ChatKit file storage: $0.10 per GB-day after 1 GB free per month.
  • Embeddings: text-embedding-3-small $0.02, text-embedding-3-large $0.13, text-embedding-ada-002 $0.10 per 1M tokens.
  • Moderation: omni-moderation-latest is free.
  • Video: no price, because the Sora video API shut down on Sep 24, 2026.

API credits from ChatGPT plans

Some ChatGPT subscriptions now include API spending. Since Oct 28, 2026, ChatGPT Pro's $100, $200 and $500 tiers add $100, $200 and $500 of API credits each month, and paid Business seats add $20 (Standard) or $100 (Premium), pooled up to $500 a month per workspace; Plus, Enterprise and Edu get none. The credits go to one linked API organization, expire at the end of each billing period, and do not raise ChatGPT or Codex limits (OpenAI Help Center).

Surcharges

Regional processing (data residency) adds 10% for models released on or after Mar 5, 2026 where it is offered, and FedRAMP endpoints add another 10%. OpenAI models used through Amazon Bedrock or Microsoft Azure are billed by those services at their own prices.

How to keep the bill down

  1. Pick the smallest model that does the job: GPT-6 Luna costs 1% of GPT-6 Astra per token (pricing).
  2. Put the fixed part of a prompt first so it is cached; caching needs at least 1,024 tokens.
  3. Send anything that can wait through the Batch API or Flex for half price.
  4. Stay under 272K input tokens to avoid long-context rates.
  5. Set spend limits per project in the dashboard (rate limits guide).

OpenAI also argues that price per token is not the whole story: its latest-model guide claims Astra's estimated cost per task is lower than earlier models because it needs fewer steps (latest model guide). That is OpenAI's own claim. Artificial Analysis measured the cost of running its whole index at $6.24 for GPT-6 Astra (max), $1.27 for GPT-6.1 Sol, $0.96 for GPT-6.1 Terra and $0.15 for GPT-6 Luna, read Nov 6, 2026. For Claude's prices on the same basis, see OpenAI API vs Claude API.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the OpenAI API cost? As of Nov 6, 2026, OpenAI API prices run from $0.10 input and $0.50 output per 1M tokens for GPT-6 Luna to $10 and $50 for GPT-6 Astra, with Batch at half price and Fast at double.

Is the ChatGPT API cheaper than ChatGPT Plus? It depends on use. The OpenAI API has no monthly fee and bills per token, so light use of GPT-6 Luna costs cents, while heavy use of GPT-6 Astra can cost far more than a $20 ChatGPT Plus plan; the two are billed separately.

What is cached input in OpenAI pricing? Cached input is the price for prompt tokens that repeat a recent prefix. On GPT-6.1 Sol and Terra it is 5% of the normal input price, and on other GPT-5.6 and later models 10%, with a write fee of 1.25x input for the 30-minute cache.

What counts as long context in the OpenAI API? Any request with more than 272K input tokens. Those requests pay higher rates, for example $20 input and $75 output per 1M tokens on GPT-6 Astra instead of $10 and $50.

Does the OpenAI API charge for web search? Yes. OpenAI's web search tool costs $10 per 1,000 calls plus the search content tokens at the model's normal rates, as of Nov 6, 2026.

How much does an image cost with the OpenAI API? OpenAI's guide puts a 1024x1024 GPT Image 2 image at about $0.006 in low quality, $0.053 in medium and $0.211 in high; the newer 2.5 and 2.6 models bill by tokens with no fixed per-image table.
