ChatGPT Keyboard Shortcuts
In the ChatGPT desktop app, Ctrl+/ (Cmd+/ on a Mac) shows every keyboard shortcut; Ctrl+N starts a new chat, Ctrl+Shift+N a temporary chat, and Ctrl+K opens the command menu. On chatgpt.com, Ctrl+K or Cmd+K opens Search. This page lists only the shortcuts OpenAI documents, as of Nov 6, 2026.
Press Ctrl+/ on Windows or Cmd+/ on a Mac in the ChatGPT desktop app to see every keyboard shortcut, and change any of them at Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts (OpenAI docs). The ones worth learning first: Ctrl+N (Cmd+N) for a new chat, Ctrl+Shift+N (Cmd+Shift+N) for a Temporary Chat, Ctrl+K (Cmd+K) for the command menu, and Ctrl+Shift+M (Control+Shift+M on a Mac) for the model picker. On chatgpt.com in a browser, Ctrl+K or Cmd+K opens Search. Everything below comes from OpenAI's own pages, as of Nov 6, 2026; shortcuts that appear only in blogs are left out.

Shortcuts on chatgpt.com
OpenAI's help pages document fewer shortcuts for the website:
- Ctrl+K (Windows) or Cmd+K (Mac) opens Search across chats, projects, images and documents. See Chat History and Search.
- Cmd+click in the search panel opens a result in a new tab, and Cmd+A selects only the conversation's content, per the release notes of Feb 13 and Feb 27, 2026 (they name the Mac keys only).
No OpenAI page read for this guide lists the website's shortcuts in full, so this page does not guess at them. Shortcut lists found on other sites may be out of date; on the website, try Ctrl+/ or Cmd+/ and see whether a list opens for your account.
Commands typed in the message box
These are not key combinations, but they save as many clicks:
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| /agent | Starts agent mode (paid plans) |
| /Deepresearch | Starts deep research |
| / then Search | Forces a web search |
| @study | Turns on study mode on the web |
| @ and a plugin name | Uses that plugin, such as @Health or @Data |
| @plugin-creator | Builds a plugin by chatting |
On iOS and Android, paid users can long-press the send button to send one message with another model, and on iOS typing @ then Sketch opens the image sketch pad. More time-savers are on ChatGPT Tips.
Voice and Codex shortcuts

- Codex composer predictions: press Tab to accept (release notes, Oct 9, 2026).
- The Codex CLI and IDE extension have their own command lists (OpenAI docs); see Codex CLI and Codex IDE Extension.
