ChatGPT group chats are retired: since Jul 9, 2026 no one on the web, iOS or Android can create a new group chat, turn a conversation into one or join one through an invite link. Existing group chats stayed open "for now" and are to become read-only later. Group chats brought several people and ChatGPT into one conversation; OpenAI piloted them on Nov 13, 2025 in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan and expanded them worldwide a week later. How did group chats work?

A group chat was one ChatGPT conversation shared by several people, who could join through an invite link (OpenAI):

Mentioning "ChatGPT" in a message made it reply.
Replies used GPT-5.1 Auto at launch.
Rate limits applied only when ChatGPT responded, so messages between people did not count against anyone's limit.
The pilot covered Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans.

Why were group chats retired?

OpenAI's Jul 9, 2026 note does not give a reason. The same day it released ChatGPT Work, Plugins and the new ChatGPT Desktop App and deprecated ChatGPT Atlas (OpenAI Help Center). No date for the read-only switch had been announced in the sources read on Nov 6, 2026.
