Record Mode
Record mode turns meetings, lectures and voice notes into a transcript and summary in the ChatGPT macOS app, for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, up to 4 hours a session; since Sep 29, 2026 OpenAI points users to the newer Meetings plugin, a Mac beta for Pro and Business.
To record a meeting with ChatGPT, open the ChatGPT app on a Mac and click the Record button at the bottom of any chat; ChatGPT transcribes as it listens, and when you select Send it writes a summary with the notes (OpenAI Help Center, read Nov 6, 2026). Record works only in the macOS desktop app, for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, with sessions capped at 4 hours (240 minutes). Its help page now opens by recommending the Meetings plugin, a Mac beta for Pro and Business since Sep 29, 2026, with Windows and Enterprise support "coming soon".

How do you record a meeting with ChatGPT?
- Update the ChatGPT app for macOS and sign in with an eligible plan (ChatGPT Desktop App).
- Click Record at the bottom of any chat. The first time, allow ChatGPT the microphone and, to capture the other side of a call, Screen & System Audio Recording in System Settings > Privacy & Security (OpenAI Help Center).
- ChatGPT transcribes live and shows a timer. Pause and resume as needed: the Stop icon pauses, Resume continues the same session.
- Select Send to end it. The transcript goes to ChatGPT, which writes the summary.
The X at the top left cancels, with a choice to upload, delete, or go back. At 4 hours the session stops by itself and its notes are saved as a private canvas.
What do you get?
The notes open as a canvas in the chat or as notes attached to the recording, depending on how the recording started (OpenAI Help Center). From there ChatGPT can turn them into a plan, an email or code. Several speakers are told apart and labeled "Speaker 1" and so on, and can be renamed afterward. Record works best in English; other languages vary.
With Reference record history on, under Settings > Personalization, ChatGPT can draw on earlier recordings' notes and transcripts in new chats. Deleting the chat stops that, though it can take a few days.
Calendar auto-join
Connect Google Calendar and Record can join scheduled meetings by itself, but only for Google Meet links. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Webex and other calls need Record started by hand in the Mac app (OpenAI Help Center).
Consent and privacy
OpenAI tells users to check local law and get the right consents before recording other people, and says the user is responsible for that (OpenAI Help Center). The audio is used only to transcribe and is then deleted (at once, for Enterprise and Edu). Transcripts and canvases follow the account's normal chat retention and are removed within 30 days of deleting the chat. On Free, Plus and Pro, transcripts and canvases may be used for training while "Improve the model for everyone" is on; turning it off stops that, and Business, Enterprise and Edu content is excluded by default (Privacy and Data Controls).
Admin settings
In workspaces, owners switch Record on or off in Settings > Workspace Controls; it is off by default for Enterprise and Edu, and Reference record history has its own switch there (OpenAI Help Center). Enterprise and Edu transcripts follow the admin's retention policy and are in the Compliance API.
The Meetings plugin
On Sep 29, 2026, OpenAI released the Meetings plugin as a beta in the new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, for Pro and Business; "Audio is deleted once your notes are ready." The Record article now calls it "a better experience": it takes notes and saves personalized summaries with action items, with Windows and Enterprise support "coming soon" (OpenAI Help Center). It is installed like any of the Plugins. The article gives no more detail on it, and OpenAI has not said whether Record itself will be retired.
