Voice Mode

ChatGPT Voice lets you talk with ChatGPT out loud. Live, powered by GPT-Live-1.1 since Oct 15, 2026, is the newest; Advanced keeps video and screen sharing on mobile; Standard is turn by turn. Plus gets 3 hours a day, Pro $100 15 hours and Pro $200 unlimited, as of Nov 6, 2026.

ChatGPT Voice lets you speak with ChatGPT and hear it answer, and you start it by selecting the Voice icon in the message bar on iOS and Android or in the prompt window on the web (ChatGPT Voice). As of Nov 6, 2026 there are three kinds, chosen in Settings > Voice: Live, powered by GPT-Live-1.1, which listens and talks at the same time; Advanced, the earlier real-time voice, kept for video and screen sharing on mobile; and Standard, which transcribes what you say before answering. Plus includes 3 hours of Live in each rolling 24 hours, Pro ($100) 15 hours and Pro ($200) unlimited.

Live does not support video or screen sharing, so for "look at this" on a phone you switch to Advanced in Settings > Voice (ChatGPT Voice).

For hard questions, Voice can hand off to GPT-5.6 or GPT-6 Astra to search or reason, a change made on Sep 9, 2026. OpenAI's Jul 8, 2026 launch demo already showed Voice fact-checking a list of dates and looking up transit delays and the weather in the middle of a conversation.

One source conflict: the Sep 9, 2026 release note gave Go "GPT-Live-1 mini", while the help article, updated later, gives Go GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, the smaller model released on Oct 15, 2026 (ChatGPT release notes, ChatGPT Voice). The newer page is used above.

How to use ChatGPT Voice

  1. On iOS or Android, select the Voice icon in the message bar; on the web, the Voice icon in the prompt window.
  2. Talk. Live listens and speaks at the same time.
  3. To show something on a phone, use Advanced: the camera button shares video, and ••• > Share Screen shares your screen.

Source: ChatGPT Voice, OpenAI Help Center, read Nov 6, 2026. Only one Voice conversation runs at a time. Since Nov 25, 2025 voice happens inside the chat; the older full-screen view is under "Separate mode" (ChatGPT release notes).

Voices and languages

As of Nov 6, 2026 the voices are Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, Maple, Sol, Spruce and Vale. Live adds voices for particular languages: Viola and Rio (Brazil), Aube and Rivage (French), Sonna and Miko (German), Leher and Neer (Hindi), Himari and Rindo (Japanese), Haetsal and Hanul (Korean), Tinta and Arrullo (Mexican Spanish), and Bubbie (English). Set the language at Settings > Voice > Language (ChatGPT Voice). Preset ChatGPT personalities do not currently apply to Live (Custom Instructions and Personality).

Settings worth knowing

In Settings > Voice you can turn on background conversations, Start with Voice, and Start automatically in CarPlay (ChatGPT Voice). ChatGPT works in Apple CarPlay on iOS 26.4 or later on all plans since Apr 2, 2026, and on the iPhone a Live call shows on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island since Aug 31, 2026.

Voice with plugins, files, Projects and Work

In 2026 voice gained more tools: files and Projects work in Live voice (Aug 7, 2026), plugins work in Live and Voice arrived in ChatGPT Work (Sep 23, 2026), and Voice works in Work and Codex in the desktop app (Jul 23, 2026) (ChatGPT release notes). Desktop voice can start from a keyboard shortcut you set in Settings (ChatGPT Work and Codex).

Privacy

Audio and video clips from voice chats are kept for 30 days; Standard voice deletes audio after transcribing it (ChatGPT Voice). Clips are used for training only if you opt in at Settings > Data Controls > Improve the model for everyone with "Include your audio recordings" or "Include your video recordings". Parents can turn Voice off for a linked teen (Parental Controls). Dictation, the microphone that types for you, is a separate feature that got a new speech-to-text model on Jun 26, 2026.

What testers found

In a Jun 8, 2026 video, Igor Pogany of The AI Advantage, who speaks most of his prompts, said ChatGPT's voice input is "not even close" to Claude's: close to perfect, with better accents, languages and punctuation, where Claude's misheard him often. His test was of speaking into ChatGPT rather than of Live conversation.

Kian of The AI Productivity Coach also preferred ChatGPT's voice mode and dictation to Gemini's in a Dec 6, 2025 video, saying Gemini's dictation sometimes missed words in his accent.
