ChatGPT Edu

ChatGPT Edu is the plan a university buys for its students, faculty and staff. OpenAI introduced it on May 30, 2024, then powered by GPT-4o. As of Nov 6, 2026 it offers "Substantially higher message limits than ChatGPT Free", building and sharing GPTs inside the workspace, SSO and SCIM, and it has no public price (ChatGPT Edu).

Edu shares ChatGPT Enterprise's models: GPT-6 Sol in Chat from Instant to Extra High, and GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, which is "off by default at launch" until an admin enables it (Enterprise and Edu models and limits). On credit pricing, each Edu user gets 3 image generations and 5 deep research queries per rolling 24 hours at no charge; more costs credits. Edu workspaces have 40 files per project and 10 active scheduled tasks (Projects, Tasks). OpenAI does not train on Edu workspace content by default (Memory FAQ).

A university arranges Edu with OpenAI's sales team for its own people.

ChatGPT for Teachers

ChatGPT for Teachers launched on Nov 19, 2025 and is "free through June 2028 for verified U.S. K-12 educators" (ChatGPT for Teachers). It includes ChatGPT Work, Plugins, ChatGPT Sites, ChatGPT Space, deep research, image creation and voice, with 3 hours of Live voice a day (ChatGPT Voice). It is for teachers, not students. Since Aug 4, 2026 Teachers and Edu have had education plugins: College Student, College Educator and K-12 Educator (release notes).

Student offers

Codex for Students

Since Mar 20, 2026, verified university students in the United States and Canada can claim "$100 in ChatGPT credits, or 2,500 credits" to use Codex beyond their plan's limits, whether that plan is Free, Go, Plus or Pro (release notes). To claim it:

  1. Go to chatgpt.com/codex/students and sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Verify that you are a student through SheerID.
  3. Use the credits in Codex once your plan's included usage runs out; they expire 12 months after the grant.

They are ChatGPT credits for Codex, not credits for the OpenAI API. See ChatGPT Credits.

2026 back-to-school offer (closed)

OpenAI's "2026 Back to School offer" gave "four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus" to current college and graduate students at eligible US degree-granting institutions, verified through SheerID (back-to-school offer). It had to be claimed by Oct 31, 2026, needed a payment method, did not apply to subscriptions billed through Apple or Google Play, and "renews at $20 per month unless you cancel". Anyone who claimed it pays $20 a month once the four free billing periods end, unless they cancel first; How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus shows how.

Is there a ChatGPT student discount now?

Not as of Nov 6, 2026. Apart from the closed back-to-school offer and the Codex credits, no help article read that day describes a student price for ChatGPT Go, ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro. Go, at $8 a month in the US and ₹399 in India, is the cheapest paid plan.

Academic researchers

  • ChatGPT for Academic Researchers (Jul 29, 2026): 12 months of complimentary access in a workspace of up to five members with "ChatGPT Pro-level usage limits", verified through SheerID, with a "$0 checkout with a valid card" (release notes).
  • Rosalind Academic Plan (Oct 15, 2026): up to 30 Business Standard seats free for up to 12 months for US university labs (release notes).

Study tools on every plan

Students on any plan, Free included, get Study Mode: type "@study" or open chatgpt.com/studymode on the web, or pick Study from the + menu in the apps (Study mode). It launched on Jul 29, 2025. Since then OpenAI has added interactive modules for "70+ math and science topics" (Mar 10, 2026), interactive quizzes (Aug 14, 2026) and flashcards on all plans (Sep 22, 2026) (release notes). Parents can set "Study hours" in parental controls.
