ChatGPT Plus vs Pro
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and Pro starts at $100 as of Nov 6, 2026; Pro adds GPT-6 Pro reasoning, Dots, Space, no five-hour limit in Work and Codex and API credits, which matter mainly to heavy Codex and Work users.
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and ChatGPT Pro costs $100, $200 or $500 a month as of Nov 6, 2026, and for most people Plus is the better buy. Pro's extra price buys three things: much more ChatGPT Work and Codex use with no five-hour limit, the Pro reasoning option in Chat (GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra), and features Plus does not have at all (Dots, ChatGPT Space, monthly API credits). If you do not run out of Plus's allowance and do not need GPT-6 Pro, Pro adds little you will notice. Both plans use GPT-6 Sol in Chat and show no ads.

What do you actually get for the extra $80?
More Work and Codex
This is the biggest difference. On Plus, OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local GPT-6.1 Sol messages, or 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages, per five-hour period in Work and Codex (learn.chatgpt.com). "Pro currently has no five-hour limit." Pro 100 was introduced on Apr 9, 2026 for "longer, high-intensity Codex sessions" (release notes), and on Oct 29, 2026 Pro 100 and Pro 500 got twice their previous Work and Codex allowance. OpenAI publishes no multiple of Plus for today's Pro tiers; the last stated figure, in April 2026, was "up to 10x more Codex usage than Plus" for a limited time on Pro 100.
GPT-6 Pro in Chat
Pro gets the Pro reasoning option, which uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, and the Extra High thinking level. Plus stops at High (models article). OpenAI's own benchmark claims for Astra are on GPT-6 Astra. For GPT-6 Pro against GPT-6 Sol at High in Chat there is no reliable comparison yet, so how much better its answers are for your work is something to try, not a published fact. GPT-6 Pro is not unlimited: each Pro tier has a weekly allowance.
Features Plus does not have
Dots, the always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, and ChatGPT Space are Pro only among personal plans (chatgpt.com/pricing). So are the monthly API credits, $100 to $500 a month for building with the OpenAI API (API credits benefit). If you would pay for the API anyway, Pro 100's credits cover $100 of the $80 difference, as long as you use them before they expire each month.
What stays the same
Both plans have GPT-6 Sol at Instant, Medium and High in Chat, ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, Codex Cloud, ChatGPT Sites, images with thinking, legacy models and no ads (chatgpt.com/pricing). For everyday questions, writing and quick lookups at Instant, the answers come from the same model on both plans.
Verdict by kind of user
| User | Better plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday chat, writing, study | Plus | Same GPT-6 Sol in Chat; Pro's extras go unused |
| Occasional coding with Codex | Plus | 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages per five hours is enough for side projects |
| Daily professional coding | Pro 100 | No five-hour limit; full Astra allowance in Codex |
| Agents running all day (Work, Dots) | Pro | Dots are Pro only; Work sessions run longer |
| Hard math, science, research questions | Try Pro 100 for a month | GPT-6 Pro and Extra High are Pro only; no reliable comparison yet |
| Heavy voice use | Pro 200 | 3 hours a day on Plus, unlimited on Pro 200 |
| Developers who pay for the API | Pro 100 | $100 a month in API credits offsets most of the price |
| Fastest possible Codex | Pro 500 | Ultrafast is Pro 500 only |
| Tight budget | Plus, or Go | Pro costs five times Plus at minimum |

A cheaper middle route: Plus with credits
If you run out of Plus's Work and Codex allowance only now and then, buying credits on Plus can cost less than Pro. Credits extend Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint extensions after the included usage runs out, and stay valid for 12 months from purchase (Using credits). OpenAI's credits article states no dollar price per credit; the student offer of "$100 in ChatGPT credits, or 2,500 credits" in March 2026 works out to 4 cents a credit, and "A typical GPT-5.6 Sol task uses about 2 to 15 credits" (learn.chatgpt.com). Credits do not unlock GPT-6 Pro, Dots or Ultrafast.
Switching between Plus and Pro
You can upgrade, switch or cancel from Settings > My Plan or the pricing page (release notes, Apr 9, 2026). Neither plan has annual billing, so trying Pro for a month and moving back costs one month at the higher price. Moving down does not refund the current period (What is ChatGPT Go? states this for Plus or Pro to Go).
What testers found
In a Jun 8, 2026 video comparing ChatGPT with Claude, Igor Pogany of The AI Advantage said the biggest unlock on both ladders comes at the $20 level, and that the $100 and $200 tiers mostly add usage, so that the plan is "just not going to cut you off".
Paul Lipsky said in a Jun 7, 2026 video that he pays for Claude Max and Google AI Ultra because of how much he uses them, but keeps ChatGPT on Plus: he uses Codex only "for a few tasks here and there", and Plus is plenty for that.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Pro worth it over Plus? Only if you use ChatGPT Work or Codex heavily enough to hit Plus's five-hour limits, need GPT-6 Pro or Dots, or can use the monthly API credits. For chat, writing and occasional coding, Plus at $20 gives the same GPT-6 Sol model.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Pro? As of Nov 6, 2026, Pro adds GPT-6 Pro reasoning and Extra High in Chat, no five-hour limit in Work and Codex, Dots, Space, larger context windows (128K and 400K tokens) and $100 to $500 of API credits a month. Plus costs $20 a month, Pro $100 to $500.
Do ChatGPT Plus and Pro use the same model? For Instant, Medium and High in Chat, yes: both use GPT-6 Sol. Pro adds the Pro option, which uses GPT-6 Pro powered by GPT-6 Astra, and Extra High.
How much more Codex does Pro give than Plus? OpenAI does not publish a current multiple. Plus has a five-hour limit (for example 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages) and Pro has none, though weekly limits may apply to both.
Can I try ChatGPT Pro for one month? Yes. Pro is billed monthly with no annual commitment, and you can switch back to Plus in Settings > My Plan; the change takes effect at the end of the paid period.
