ChatGPT is ahead on coding agents and gives more on its free plan, and the two are close on most everyday tasks.
Gemini is ahead of ChatGPT on the public chat leaderboards as of Nov 6, 2026: Google's Gemini 4 Argon ranks 2nd on the Arena text leaderboard against OpenAI's best at 22nd, and Gemini plans add video generation, which ChatGPT no longer offers. ChatGPT is ahead for coding, where GPT-6 Astra ranks 2nd on Arena's web development board, and its free plan gives unlimited text chats. The main paid plans cost almost the same: Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month and ChatGPT Plus at $20. If you live in Gmail, Docs and Android, Gemini fits in; if you want the strongest coding agent on an entry plan, ChatGPT does.

Writing and everyday answers
Gemini wins on the broadest measure. On the Arena text leaderboard, where people pick the better of two anonymous answers, Gemini 4 Argon scores 1520 and ranks 2nd, behind only Google's own Gemini 4 Carbon; OpenAI's best entry, GPT-5.6 Sol, is 22nd at 1485, and GPT-6 Astra 37th at 1476 (updated Oct 27, 2026). No Google page describing Gemini 4 Carbon could be found on Nov 6, 2026, and it is not on the Gemini plans page, which names Gemini 4 Argon.
The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which leans on reasoning, coding and agent tests rather than preference votes, reverses the order: GPT-6 Astra scores 57 against Gemini 4 Argon's 50 (read Nov 6, 2026). In Tom's Guide's Aug 27, 2026 test of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as writing coaches, neither won: the reviewer chose Claude. No published hands-on test pits ChatGPT against Gemini 4 Argon directly.
Coding
ChatGPT wins coding. GPT-6 Astra ranks 2nd on Arena's WebDev board at 1773 and GPT-6.1 Sol 5th at 1751; Google's best there is Gemini 4 Carbon, 4th at 1768 and marked preliminary, and Gemini 4 Argon, the model in Google's app plans, is not in the top seven. Every ChatGPT plan includes Codex, in limited form on Free and Go and with cloud tasks from Plus up.
Google's coding agent is Antigravity, free for individuals with basic weekly limits and higher limits on Google AI Pro and Ultra. It also offers Claude models: Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 are in Antigravity on Pro and Ultra. Research
Both offer a deep research mode on their free plans: ChatGPT's Deep Research in limited form and Gemini's Deep Research. Both search the web for free. No dated, independent test compares their reports, so there is no reliable comparison yet; one creator's timing of the two is under What testers found below. Google also bundles its notebook tool, now called Gemini Notebook, with more Audio Overviews on Pro.
Images and video
For still images, no measured comparison settles it. ChatGPT Images 2.6 runs on every ChatGPT plan, and Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing with limited Nano Banana Pro in Google Flow. The two image models are compared on ChatGPT Images vs Nano Banana.
Video is a clear Gemini win, because ChatGPT has none. OpenAI ended the Sora app on Apr 26, 2026 and the Sora API on Sep 24, 2026, with no replacement. Google AI Plus includes video generation and Gemini Omni Flash in Flow, Pro adds a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite, and Ultra lists Veo 3.1. See Sora vs Veo.
Voice
Gemini Live is on Gemini's free plan. ChatGPT's Live voice is on Free with limited access, 3 hours a day on Go and Plus, 15 on Pro $100 and unlimited on Pro $200. No benchmark compares the two voices, so there is no reliable comparison yet; one creator's impression is under What testers found below. More: Voice Mode.

Gemini gives more for the money at each step, mostly through Google services rather than more AI. US prices on Nov 6, 2026:

Google AI Pro also includes Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Google Home Premium Standard and YouTube Premium Lite; Ultra includes YouTube Premium. ChatGPT Pro instead includes monthly API credits of $100, $200 or $500. Google localizes prices: the same page showed AI Pro at AED 76.99 a month in the UAE. Google and Microsoft integration
Gemini is built into Google's own apps: Gmail, Docs and Vids on AI Pro, and auto browse in Chrome as a preview for Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. ChatGPT reaches into Office and Sheets through add-ins instead: Excel and Google Sheets since May 5, 2026, PowerPoint since Jul 6 and Word since Sep 17, plus Plugins for Gmail, Slack and other services. Privacy
ChatGPT has the cleaner control. OpenAI shares your chats for training by default on personal plans, but turning off Improve the model for everyone stops it and keeps your chat history. On Gemini, the Keep Activity setting does both jobs: with it on, Google may use your activity for training generative AI models and a subset of chats is read by human reviewers, kept up to three years even if you delete your activity; with it off, future chats are not used for training but also are not saved in your history (Google keeps them 72 hours). Limits
ChatGPT's free plan is the more open one: unlimited everyday text chats, with separate limits on uploads, images and tools. Google describes its paid plans relative to free usage: AI Plus 2x, AI Pro 4x, Ultra 5x or 20x Pro's. Neither publishes message counts for its main plan's chat. Details: ChatGPT Usage Limits.
When to choose Gemini, and when ChatGPT
Choose Gemini if you want video, cloud storage and YouTube Premium in the same bill, if you work in Gmail and Docs, or if blind-vote answer quality matters most. Choose ChatGPT for coding with Codex, for a free plan without a message cap, for Office add-ins, or for a training opt-out that keeps your history. More rivals: When to Use Something Else.

What testers found
In a Jun 7, 2026 video comparing the $20 plans, Paul J Lipsky showed Gemini's Canvas working "a lot closer to an entire word processor": headings, bold, lists and printing beside the chat. He judged it the best of the three for writing together with the AI, with Claude's model still his pick for the writing itself.
Kian of The AI Productivity Coach, in a Dec 6, 2025 video comparing the two for everyday work, found in his testing that Gemini's Deep Research read 20 to 47 sources a query and finished in 8 to 12 minutes, against 7 to 27 sources and 10 to 17 minutes for ChatGPT, whose reports came out longer. He preferred Gemini for research because it read more sources. His test used Gemini 3 Pro, an older model than today's.
The same video found ChatGPT's voice mode and dictation "much better": Gemini's dictation sometimes missed what he said, which he put down partly to his accent, so he recommends ChatGPT to people who like to talk to an AI.
After a month on each $20 plan, Parker Prompts said in an Aug 12, 2026 video that Gemini lasted longest before its limits and ChatGPT had the most predictable ones, and that both drop you to a weaker model rather than lock you out. He called Google AI Pro the value pick and ChatGPT Plus "the steady, no surprises choice", the one to get if images matter.

Is Gemini better than ChatGPT? On Arena's blind-vote text leaderboard, yes: Gemini 4 Argon ranks 2nd and ChatGPT's best model 22nd (Oct 27, 2026). On coding and on Artificial Analysis's reasoning index, ChatGPT's GPT-6 Astra scores higher, so the answer depends on the task.
Is Gemini free like ChatGPT? Both have free plans. Gemini's free plan includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, image generation and 15 GB of storage; ChatGPT Free gives unlimited everyday text chats with limited images, deep research and Codex.
Is Google AI Pro cheaper than ChatGPT Plus? By a cent: Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month and ChatGPT Plus $20 in the US. Google AI Pro also includes 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite.
Can ChatGPT make videos like Gemini? No. OpenAI shut down the Sora app on Apr 26, 2026 and the Sora API on Sep 24, 2026, so ChatGPT makes images and GIFs but not video. Gemini plans include video generation with Veo and Gemini Omni.
