Shopping in ChatGPT
Ask ChatGPT what to buy and it shows product results with prices and links, which OpenAI says are chosen independently and are not ads; it also offers shopping research buyer's guides, virtual try-on, Favorites and restaurant bookings, while Instant Checkout, launched in 2025, is no longer described on OpenAI's help pages.
To shop with ChatGPT, ask a question with buying intent ("best running shoes for flat feet under $120") and ChatGPT answers with product results: images, details, prices from several merchants and links to buy (OpenAI Help Center, read Nov 6, 2026). OpenAI says these results are "selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads". Shopping works on the web and in the mobile apps. Around it sit shopping research (a buyer's guide, since Nov 24, 2025), virtual try-on and Favorites (since Oct 1, 2026), and restaurant reservations. Instant Checkout, buying inside the chat, launched on Sep 29, 2025, but its help page is gone and its status on Nov 6, 2026 could not be confirmed.

How does ChatGPT pick products?
ChatGPT weighs the question, what it knows from Memory and custom instructions, structured data from providers, and OpenAI's own policies (OpenAI Help Center). Price counts for more when a budget is given, and not every matching product is shown. Labels such as "Budget-friendly" are the model's own words, not guarantees, and review summaries come from public sites that OpenAI does not check.
Merchants are ranked by availability, price, quality, and whether the seller is the maker or main seller; the first price shown is often the first merchant's, and a "Best price" label may appear when several sell the item. Prices come from third parties and may not be the lowest. Ask ChatGPT to compare products side by side, explain trade-offs, or suggest alternatives. Since Mar 24, 2026, you can also upload an image to find similar items.
Ads are separate: on Free and Go, where ads are tested, they appear apart from the answer and are labeled sponsored (release notes, Feb 9, 2026).
Shopping research
Shopping research, launched on Nov 24, 2025 for logged-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on web, iOS and Android, works like a small deep research run for one purchase: describe the need, answer ChatGPT's clarifying questions, and it researches across the web and returns "a personalized buyer's guide". At launch OpenAI promised "nearly unlimited usage" through the 2025 holidays (OpenAI); no limit for it in 2026 is published.
How do you use virtual try-on?
- On a clothing or accessory result, select Try on.
- Take or upload a selfie.
- ChatGPT shows you wearing it, made with ChatGPT Images (OpenAI Help Center).
You can also upload a photo of a garment in a chat. The image does not promise fit or size. Your reference photos are kept for reuse and are managed at Settings > Personalization > Reference photos. OpenAI's article names no plan limits for try-on.
Favorites
Select the bookmark icon on a product to save it to Favorites, or to a new folder; Remove from Favorites takes it off. Saved products are in Library > Favorites (OpenAI Help Center); places can be saved the same way. See File Uploads and Library.
Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
On Sep 29, 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, built with Stripe on the open Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP): "U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users can buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers", one item at a time, with payment going "directly from you to the merchant, not through OpenAI" (OpenAI). Merchants paid a fee; buyers paid nothing extra. On Nov 20, 2025, Shopify merchants joined, "starting with Spanx, Skims, and Glossier". ACP's documentation is at developers.openai.com/commerce.
On Nov 6, 2026 the Instant Checkout help article answers "That page doesn't exist", and the current shopping article does not mention checkout or a buy button (OpenAI Help Center). ACP still feeds product data: the Mar 24, 2026 update said results draw on data "from merchants and other providers using the Agentic Commerce Protocol" (release notes). Whether you can still pay inside ChatGPT is not stated on any OpenAI page read today. Before buying through any link, check the final price, shipping, sizes and returns on the merchant's page, as OpenAI advises.
Restaurant reservations
Since Aug 10, 2026, ChatGPT can book tables through OpenTable (worldwide), Resy (US) and Yelp (US and Canada). It works on eligible consumer plans on the web, mobile and desktop when using GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-5.6 Luna, but not in ChatGPT Work, not on Business, Enterprise or Edu, and not in voice (OpenAI Help Center).
For merchants
Shopify stores appear through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for a direct product feed at https://chatgpt.com/merchants/ (OpenAI Help Center). Sites opt in to ChatGPT Search by allowing the crawler "OAI-SearchBot" (OpenAI Help Center). In Lockdown Mode, "shopping-agent experiences" are unavailable (OpenAI Help Center).
