When to Use Something Else

ChatGPT is not the best choice for every task as of Nov 6, 2026. Claude leads for writing and coding, Gemini for blind-vote answer quality and video, Microsoft 365 Premium for Office, Perplexity for a free AI browser and DeepSeek for open weights, while ChatGPT stays the better pick for a free plan, images, voice and reasoning against most rivals.

As of Nov 6, 2026, use Claude instead of ChatGPT for writing and coding, Gemini when you want video or the top-rated answers on blind-vote leaderboards, Microsoft 365 Premium when you need the Office apps, Perplexity's Comet for a free AI browser, and DeepSeek when you need open weights. Stay with ChatGPT for the most generous free plan, image generation, voice and a single app for everything. Each recommendation below names a dated source; where no test settles a task, this page says so instead of guessing. Leaderboards move every few weeks, so check the date on any ranking before you switch.

Where ChatGPT is still the better pick

Before switching, know what you would give up. ChatGPT Free gives unlimited everyday text chats, where Claude Free is limited every 5 hours and every week and Perplexity Free allows 3 Pro Searches a day. It makes images on every plan, which Claude cannot do at all. Its Live voice comes with published allowances, 3 hours a day on Plus, while Claude's voice is still in beta. Its coding agent, Codex, is included even on Free and Go, in limited form.

On measured reasoning ChatGPT is well ahead of Grok and DeepSeek: GPT-6 Astra scores 57 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, against 35 for Grok 4.7 and 33 for DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and it beats Gemini 4 Argon's 50 there too. For developers, OpenAI's smallest model, GPT-6 Luna, costs $0.10 per million input tokens, less per token than DeepSeek's Flash. And ChatGPT has the widest range of plans, from Go at $8 a month to Pro at $500 with API credits included. See ChatGPT Plans and Pricing.

Writing: use Claude

For essays, editing and anything that has to sound human, Claude is ahead on every dated source found. Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 ranks 3rd on Arena's blind-vote text board at 1509; OpenAI's best, GPT-5.6 Sol, is 22nd at 1485 (Oct 27, 2026). Tom's Guide's Sep 24, 2026 test gave Claude the rounds for planning and natural writing and four of five overall, and its Aug 27, 2026 test picked Claude as the best writing coach over ChatGPT and Gemini. Claude Pro costs the same $20 a month as ChatGPT Plus. Full comparison: ChatGPT vs Claude. Learn more: Claude on Ai.vi.ki.

Coding: Claude, narrowly

On Arena's WebDev board, Claude Opus 5.5 is 1st at 1810, GPT-6 Astra 2nd at 1773, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 3rd at 1770 (Oct 27, 2026). That is a narrow lead: GPT-6 Astra beats Claude on some of the makers' own agent tests, such as AutomationBench in Anthropic's own table. Claude Code needs Claude Pro or higher; ChatGPT's Codex starts free. If you mainly code in an editor, the agents are compared on Codex vs Claude Code, Codex vs Cursor, Codex vs GitHub Copilot and Codex vs Antigravity.

Everyday answers and video: Gemini

Gemini 4 Argon, the model in Google AI Pro, ranks 2nd on Arena's text board at 1520, ahead of every OpenAI and Anthropic model (Oct 27, 2026). Google's Gemini 4 Carbon ranks 1st but is not on Google's consumer plans page. Note the counterweight: on the Artificial Analysis index, which tests reasoning rather than preference, GPT-6 Astra outscores Argon 57 to 50.

For video, use Gemini because ChatGPT has none. OpenAI closed the Sora app on Apr 26, 2026 with no replacement, while Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month includes video generation and Pro adds a trial of Veo 3.1 Lite. Google AI Pro, at $19.99, also brings 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. Compare: ChatGPT vs Gemini, Sora vs Veo. Learn more: Gemini on Ai.vi.ki.

Office documents: Microsoft 365 Premium

If you would pay for Word, Excel and PowerPoint anyway, Microsoft 365 Premium bundles them with Copilot's highest consumer usage for $19.99 a month, against ChatGPT Plus at $20 with no apps. The catch: Microsoft does not say which model runs consumer Copilot, so its answer quality cannot be compared. If you already own Office, ChatGPT's own add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint and Word may be enough; see ChatGPT in Office and ChatGPT vs Copilot. Learn more: Microsoft Copilot on Ai.vi.ki.

Search and an AI browser: Perplexity

Perplexity is built to search and cite, but no dated independent test shows it answers search questions better than ChatGPT Search, so pick it for its design rather than a measured win. Its clear advantage is the browser: Comet has been free for everyone since Oct 2025, while OpenAI retired its ChatGPT Atlas browser on Aug 9, 2026. Gemini in Chrome also offers auto browse as a preview for US Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. See ChatGPT vs Perplexity and ChatGPT Atlas vs Other AI Browsers. Learn more: Perplexity on Ai.vi.ki.

Open weights: DeepSeek

To run a model on your own hardware or build on it freely, DeepSeek is the current choice: DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 is on Hugging Face under the MIT license. OpenAI's open models, gpt-oss, date from Aug 5, 2025. Using DeepSeek's own app or API is a different matter: its privacy policy says personal data is stored in China. See ChatGPT vs DeepSeek. Learn more: DeepSeek on Ai.vi.ki.

Privacy by default: Claude

OpenAI uses personal ChatGPT chats for training unless you turn it off in Settings > Data controls. Anthropic says it trains on consumer Claude chats only if you choose to allow it. If you will never change a setting, Claude's default is the more private one; if you will, ChatGPT's opt-out works and keeps your history. Avoid relying on Grok for this: xAI's privacy policy (Oct 27, 2026) says it trains on user content and describes no opt-out setting. See Privacy and Data Controls.

Grok, for X and Cursor users

Grok is worth it mainly as part of a bundle. The X Subscription, launched on Oct 13, 2026, puts Grok, the Cursor coding app and X Premium in one bill from $8 a month, with the latest Grok models from $30. Grok also makes video, and it won Tom's Guide's Oct 24, 2026 test of everyday questions three rounds to two, though it trails ChatGPT on measured reasoning. See ChatGPT vs Grok. Learn more: Grok on Ai.vi.ki.

Tasks with no reliable comparison yet

  • Still images. Arena's blind votes of Nov 2, 2026 rank OpenAI's image models above Google's Nano Banana and Grok Imagine, but Midjourney is not on the board and no dated head-to-head test settles it; see ChatGPT Images vs Nano Banana.
  • Voice. No benchmark compares ChatGPT's Live voice with Gemini Live, Claude's voice mode or Grok's voice; creators' impressions are below.
  • Deep research reports. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity all write long cited reports; no independent test compares their quality, though one creator timed two of them (below).
  • Copilot's answers. Microsoft names no model for consumer Copilot, and none appears on Arena's text leaderboard.

What testers found

Two creators who use voice daily both preferred ChatGPT's. In a Jun 8, 2026 video for The AI Advantage, Igor Pogany called ChatGPT's voice input "close to perfect" and Claude's "flaky", weaker with other languages, accents and punctuation.

Kian of The AI Productivity Coach found ChatGPT's voice mode and dictation "much better" than Gemini's, whose dictation sometimes missed what he said.

In the same video, his Deep Research runs found Gemini reading more sources (20 to 47 a query against 7 to 27) and finishing faster (8 to 12 minutes against 10 to 17), while ChatGPT's reports came out longer. He used Gemini 3 Pro, an older model, and one creator's runs are not a quality test.

On images, Parker Prompts said in an Aug 12, 2026 video that ChatGPT has "the slight edge" for text-heavy images such as posters, while Gemini's Nano Banana is as good and often faster for realistic photo edits.

Frequently asked questions

What is better than ChatGPT? It depends on the task: Claude leads Arena's leaderboards for writing and web coding, and Gemini 4 Argon ranks above every OpenAI model on Arena's text board (Oct 27, 2026). ChatGPT is still ahead on free use, images, voice and on reasoning against Grok and DeepSeek.

What is the best free alternative to ChatGPT? Gemini's free plan, which includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, image generation and 15 GB of storage. Note that ChatGPT Free itself gives unlimited everyday text chats, which Claude Free and Perplexity Free do not.

Is there a ChatGPT alternative that makes videos? Yes. ChatGPT stopped making video when OpenAI closed the Sora app on Apr 26, 2026; Google's Gemini plans include video generation with Veo and Gemini Omni, and Grok Imagine makes video too.

Which AI is best for writing instead of ChatGPT? Claude: Claude Opus 5.5 ranks 3rd on Arena's text leaderboard against ChatGPT's best at 22nd (Oct 27, 2026), and Tom's Guide picked Claude for writing in its Aug and Sep 2026 tests.

Which ChatGPT alternative is most private? Claude trains on consumer chats only if you allow it; ChatGPT trains by default but lets you turn it off. DeepSeek stores data in China and xAI's policy describes no opt-out setting, so both are weaker choices for privacy.
