GPT-4o

GPT-4o was OpenAI's "omni" model, launched May 13, 2024, that brought native voice and image generation to ChatGPT. It was retired from ChatGPT on Feb 13, 2026 (Apr 3, 2026 in business custom GPTs) and shuts down in the API on Jan 14, 2027.

GPT-4o is no longer in ChatGPT: OpenAI retired it on Feb 13, 2026, and kept it only in custom GPTs on Business, Enterprise and Edu until Apr 3, 2026, after which "GPT-4o will be fully retired across all plans." It remains in the OpenAI API until Jan 14, 2027, with GPT-6 Luna as the named replacement. Launched on May 13, 2024, GPT-4o ("o" for "omni") was the model that made voice, vision and later image generation part of everyday ChatGPT, and the first top model OpenAI offered on the free tier.

What GPT-4o brought to ChatGPT

At launch OpenAI made GPT-4o available in the free tier, and to Plus users with up to 5x higher message limits, at a time when "more than a hundred million people" used ChatGPT each week. Over the next year it carried most of ChatGPT's new features:

The sycophancy rollback

On Apr 29, 2025, OpenAI reverted an update to GPT-4o because it had become sycophantic, flattering users and agreeing too readily. The reversal is recorded in OpenAI's model release notes; OpenAI's own explanatory posts about it were not read for this page.

Retirement

15:25 GPT-5 replaced GPT-4o as the default on Aug 7, 2025. OpenAI later wrote that GPT-4o had been deprecated and then restored at the GPT-5 release after feedback from Plus and Pro users. On Jan 29, 2026 it announced the final date: GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and o4-mini would leave ChatGPT on Feb 13, 2026, with no change to the API. Enterprise, Business and Edu workspaces could keep GPT-4o in custom GPTs until Apr 3, 2026 (OpenAI Help Center). Conversations that used it continue on current models. See Retired ChatGPT Models.

GPT-4o in the API

GPT-4o is still on OpenAI's price list as of Nov 6, 2026, at $2.50 input and $10 output per million tokens (gpt-4o-mini $0.15 / $0.60). OpenAI announced on Oct 14, 2026 that both shut down on Jan 14, 2027, along with GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, and names gpt-6-luna as the replacement, which costs less ($0.10 / $0.50). Existing GPT-4o fine-tunes keep working until their base model is deprecated; OpenAI is winding down fine-tuning (see Fine-Tuning).
