ChatGPT Usage Limits
Every ChatGPT plan has unlimited everyday text chats as of Nov 6, 2026, but tools have limits: Work and Codex messages per five hours, voice hours per day, agent messages per month, file uploads, storage and context windows, which OpenAI publishes only in part.
ChatGPT's usage limits, as of Nov 6, 2026, start from one rule: everyday text chats are unlimited on every consumer plan, "subject to abuse guardrails" (chatgpt.com/pricing). The limits are on everything else: the stronger reasoning models, ChatGPT Work and Codex, voice, image creation, deep research, agent mode, file uploads and storage. OpenAI publishes numbers for some of them, below with their sources, and only "Limited", "Expanded" or "Maximum" for the rest. When you hit a limit, ChatGPT tells you when it resets and, depending on the tool, falls back to a smaller model or offers credits.
Quick facts
| Text chats | Unlimited on every plan, subject to abuse guardrails |
| Work and Codex (Plus) | 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol local messages per five hours |
| Work and Codex (Pro) | No five-hour limit; weekly limits may apply |
| Voice | 3 hours a day on Go and Plus, unlimited on Pro 200 |
| Agent mode | 40 messages a month on Plus, 400 on Pro |
| File uploads | 3 a day on Free; 80 every 3 hours on paid plans |
| Files per message | 20 |

Chat: models and thinking levels
Every plan can send as many ordinary text messages as it likes. What is metered is reasoning. Free and Go have no thinking levels, only the Think button; Plus has Medium and High; Pro, Business and Enterprise have Extra High and the Pro option too (GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT).
OpenAI publishes no message counts for GPT-6 Sol at Medium to Extra High, or for GPT-6 Pro, as of Nov 6, 2026. What it does say:
- "A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model": each Pro tier has a weekly GPT-6 Pro allowance. On Pro 200, ChatGPT switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium when it runs out; on Pro 100, GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro share one weekly allowance, as do Business Standard and Premium seats (models article).
- On Plus and Pro, ChatGPT switches to another model after you reach GPT-6 message limits (model release notes, Oct 29, 2026).
- Plus may have message caps "especially during high demand" (What is ChatGPT Plus?).
- Enterprise offers "virtually unlimited messages for eligible base models" (Enterprise and Edu models and limits).
ChatGPT Work and Codex
Work, Codex, ChatGPT for Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and workspace agents share one allowance (Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan). OpenAI's estimates of local messages per five-hour period on Plus and on Business Standard seats, as of Nov 6, 2026:
| Model | Local messages per 5 hours |
|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | 5 to 45 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | 15 to 160 |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | 35 to 285 |
| GPT-6 Sol | 15 to 150 |
| GPT-6 Luna | 350 to 3,000 |

- Pro: "Pro currently has no five-hour limit." Business Premium seats have none either (ChatGPT Business overview). Weekly limits may apply to every plan.
- Free and Go: limited use in the desktop app, with no published number.
- Enterprise and Edu on flexible pricing have no fixed limits; use is billed.
- Speed costs allowance: Fast mode uses it 2.5 times as fast, Ultrafast (Pro 500 only) 8 times; image generation in Codex uses it about 3 to 5 times faster on average (learn.chatgpt.com).
- Cloud tasks may use more allowance than local messages.
Since Jun 11, 2026 eligible Plus and Pro users can bank Codex rate-limit resets, with one free reset at launch and resets from referrals usable for 30 days (release notes). ChatGPT's file, image and voice limits do not apply inside Codex (Using Codex). Codex Pricing and Limits goes deeper.

| Pro 200 | Unlimited GPT-Live-1.1, subject to abuse guardrails |
| Pro 500 | Not listed |
| Business Standard | 3 hours, then 1.25 credits a minute |
| Business Premium | 15 hours, then 1.25 credits a minute |
| K-12 Teachers | 3 hours |
| Enterprise, Edu on credits | 1.25 credits a minute |
| Enterprise on USD billing | $0.05 a minute |
Voice in the desktop app's Work and Codex draws on the Codex budget at $0.05 a minute.
Agent mode, deep research and images
| Tool | Free | Go | Plus | Pro | Business, Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agent mode | None | None | 40 messages a month | 400 a month | 40 a month, or 30 credits a message on flexible pricing |
| Deep research | Limited | Limited | Expanded | Maximum | 50 credits a task on credit pricing |
| Image creation | Limited | More | More, with thinking | Unlimited | 5 credits an image on credit pricing |
Sources: ChatGPT agent, chatgpt.com/pricing, rate card, read Nov 6, 2026. Only the first agent request you start counts toward the agent limit. Edu users get 3 image generations and 5 deep research queries per rolling 24 hours at no charge.
For deep research, "Your in-product usage counter shows your remaining tasks", and on plans with a fixed monthly allowance it "resets every 30 days from the date of your first use" (Deep research in ChatGPT). OpenAI publishes no image count per plan; a Codex help article shows an example limit banner reading "50 images in the last day" (Using Codex). See Agent Mode, Deep Research and ChatGPT Images.

| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Uploads on Free | 3 files a day |

| Plan | Instant | With reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 27K tokens (about 12 pages) | Varies |

Source: chatgpt.com/pricing, read Nov 6, 2026. "The portion available for user input is smaller than the total window." In ChatGPT Work and Codex, GPT-6.1 Sol has a default window of 500,000 tokens.
Scheduled tasks and other limits
- Scheduled Tasks: active tasks are capped at "3 for Free and Go, 5 for Plus, 10 for Business and Edu, and 15 for Pro and Enterprise". Free tasks run at most once a day; paid plans can repeat hourly. Event-triggered tasks run up to 30 times an hour and 720 times a day (Tasks).
- Custom instructions: up to 5,000 characters on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu (release notes, Jul 15, 2026).
- Shared projects: up to 5 collaborators on Free, 10 on Go and Plus, 100 on Pro (Projects).
- ChatGPT Sites: no fixed number of Sites on Plus and Pro, each with up to 10 GB of database (Sites help).
What happens when you hit a limit?
- Chat models switch to a fallback model until the limit resets; on Pro 200 it is GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium (models article).
- Work, Codex and the Office extensions stop until the five-hour or weekly window resets, unless you use credits; Plus and Pro can buy them, and Business, Edu and Enterprise buy workspace credits (learn.chatgpt.com).
- Voice limits run over a rolling 24 hours; Business seats carry on at 1.25 credits a minute.
- Deep research and images wait for their counters to reset.
OpenAI Support cannot reset limits (About ChatGPT Pro tiers). Upgrading resets the Free plan's limits on uploads, data analysis and images (Free Tier FAQ). ChatGPT Plans and Pricing shows which plan raises which limit.
What testers found
In a Jun 7, 2026 video comparing ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro, Paul Lipsky found OpenAI's limits the easiest to understand because it gave clear numbers, and pointed out that a three-hour window gives more resets in a day than Claude's five hours. He also noted that Codex had a separate agent allowance, so using it up left ChatGPT itself working.
The host of Parker Prompts, testing the same plans in an Aug 12, 2026 video, found that Claude and Gemini weigh how heavy each request is rather than counting messages, and that ChatGPT and Gemini drop to a weaker model at the limit instead of stopping. He judged ChatGPT's limits the most predictable of the three and Claude's the quickest to run out.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT have a message limit? Not for everyday text chats: they are unlimited on every plan as of Nov 6, 2026, subject to abuse guardrails. Reasoning models, Work, Codex, voice, images, deep research, agent mode and uploads have limits.
How long until my ChatGPT limit resets? It depends on the tool: Work and Codex limits run in five-hour windows plus weekly limits, voice over a rolling 24 hours, deep research every 30 days from first use. ChatGPT shows the reset time when you hit the limit.
How many messages does ChatGPT Plus get? Plus has unlimited everyday text chats. OpenAI publishes no count for GPT-6 Sol reasoning in Chat; in Work and Codex it estimates 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol or 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra local messages per five hours.
Is ChatGPT Pro unlimited? No. Pro has no five-hour limit in Work and Codex, but weekly limits may apply, GPT-6 Pro has a weekly allowance, and unlimited features are subject to abuse guardrails.
How many files can I upload to ChatGPT? Free users can upload 3 files a day; paid users up to 80 files every 3 hours, and up to 20 files in one message. Documents can be up to 512 MB each.
Can OpenAI support reset my ChatGPT limit? No. You wait for the reset, buy credits for Codex, Work and the Office extensions, or move to a higher plan.
