ChatGPT Mobile App

The ChatGPT app is free on the App Store for iPhone (iOS 18.0 or later) and on Google Play for Android, made by OpenAI. It adds voice, the camera, document scanning, Lock Screen voice and Codex Remote to what ChatGPT does on the web.

The ChatGPT app is free on the App Store for iPhone, needing iOS 18.0 or later, and on Google Play for Android; the developer listed on the App Store is OpenAI OpCo, LLC. It signs in to the same account as the web and desktop app and adds what a phone does best: voice with the camera and screen sharing, document scanning, voice from the iPhone Lock Screen, and Codex Remote for following coding work from a desktop. Paid plans can be bought inside the app, and then they are managed and canceled through Apple or Google.

How to get the ChatGPT app

  1. On an iPhone, open the App Store listing; on Android, the Google Play listing. Check that the developer is OpenAI before installing.
  2. Install it and sign in with an existing ChatGPT account, or create one.
  3. To subscribe, choose a plan in the app; that purchase is billed by Apple or Google and is canceled there, not on chatgpt.com (Canceling your ChatGPT subscription). Refunds for App Store purchases are requested from Apple.

Voice and the camera

Voice is the app's biggest difference from the web. Tap the Voice icon in the message bar to start (ChatGPT Voice). As of Nov 6, 2026 there are three voice options in Settings > Voice: Live, powered by GPT-Live-1.1 or GPT-Live-1.1 Quip depending on the plan; Advanced, the previous real-time voice, which is the one to choose for video and screen sharing on mobile; and Standard, which transcribes first and then answers. In Advanced, the camera button shows ChatGPT what the camera sees, and ••• > Share Screen shares the phone's screen. Daily limits run from limited on Free to 3 hours on Go and Plus and 15 hours on Pro 100 in a rolling 24 hours; details are on Voice Mode.

On iPhone, a voice conversation shows on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island as a Live Activity since Aug 31, 2026, and Settings > Voice offers background conversations and starting in voice. In the car, CarPlay offers a new voice chat, Projects and pinned or recent chats, and can start voice automatically; it cannot see maps, vehicle data or live location (ChatGPT in Other Apps).

Scan, photos and files

Since Oct 1, 2026, the iPhone app can scan multi-page documents: open the camera, tap the three-dot menu and choose Scan. Since Aug 21, 2026, pressing and holding + on iOS shows recent photos to attach. Files and images attach from + > Add photos & files, with the same limits as on the web (File Uploads and Library). Images can also be drawn: in the image tools, type @ and choose Sketch to turn a sketch into an image (Images in ChatGPT), and sticker packs made in the app can be added to iMessage or WhatsApp (ChatGPT Images).

Choosing a model and a mode

On iOS and Android the model picker sits at the top of the conversation (release notes, Jun 10, 2026). Paid users can also long-press the send button to choose a model for one message without changing the default, on iOS since Jun 8, 2026 and on Android since Jun 18, 2026. On plans with ChatGPT Work, select Chat or Work from the dropdown to switch modes (ChatGPT Work and Codex).

Codex on the phone

Codex is not a separate mode on mobile; "Codex is not selectable on web or mobile", but Codex Cloud tasks can be started and continued there. Codex sessions running on a Mac or Windows computer show under the Remote tab, where they can be followed and answered. Codex arrived in the mobile app as a preview on May 14, 2026 for every plan including Free and Go, and Codex Remote became generally available on all plans on Jun 25, 2026 (Codex).

Remote reaches desktop Work tasks as well as Codex. In OpenAI's video on using ChatGPT Work from a phone, a task already running on a laptop is opened from the phone after pairing: open Remote on the computer, scan its pairing code with the ChatGPT app and choose the computer. The task keeps using the laptop's files and apps, so the computer has to stay awake and online; on a Mac, Keep this Mac awake does that.

Accounts, privacy and safety

Since Oct 30, 2026 the apps can stay signed in to two accounts: Settings > Switch account. Locked Chats open with Face ID, Touch ID or the phone's own unlock, and close again after one minute in the background; on Android, screenshots of locked chats may come out blank (Using locked chats). Training and export controls are under the profile icon in the sidebar, then Data controls (Data controls); see Privacy and Data Controls.

Other things the app does

  • Study mode: on iOS, + > Study; on Android, + and search for Study (Study mode; Study Mode).
  • Health: on iPhone, Apple Health data can be connected in Health in ChatGPT (US, 18+, app version 1.2026.188 or later).
  • Dots: a dot is set up in the iOS or Android app or on the desktop, not on mobile web (Dots).
  • Widget: an iOS widget since Feb 21, 2025.
  • Sidebar: since Aug 21, 2026 the Android sidebar shows up to eight recent chats (Android app 1.2026.216 or later).

In OpenAI's video on setting up a dot on a phone, dots work in both the iOS and Android apps, and the way in is Meet dot in the top left corner of the ChatGPT app. It opens a thread with the dot, which may then ask for access to a calendar and email.
