ChatGPT and its modes

ChatGPT is the product most people mean by OpenAI. Since Jul 9, 2026 its desktop app has held three modes: Chat for conversation, Work for longer tasks and Codex for software (ChatGPT release notes). It is sold as Free, Go ($8), Plus ($20) and Pro ($100, $200 or $500 a month) for individuals, and as Business, Enterprise and Edu for organizations (ChatGPT Plans and Pricing). The same app runs on the iPhone and Android, and pieces of it reach other software: ChatGPT in Office for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, the ChatGPT Browser Extension, and ChatGPT in Other Apps such as WhatsApp and CarPlay.

Inside ChatGPT sit many features that are products in their own right: ChatGPT Search, Deep Research, Agent Mode, Memory, Projects, Scheduled Tasks, Study Mode, Health in ChatGPT, Finances in ChatGPT, Shopping in ChatGPT and Record Mode. The full list starts on the home page, ChatGPT.

Codex

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It runs in the ChatGPT desktop app, as the open-source Codex CLI, as an IDE extension and in the cloud (Codex Cloud), and it is included on every ChatGPT plan, Free and Go among them. The name is older than the product: OpenAI's first Codex was a code model released on Aug 10, 2021 that powered GitHub Copilot and was deprecated in March 2023. The current agent began as a research preview on May 16, 2025. Prices and limits are on Codex Pricing and Limits.

The OpenAI API

The OpenAI API sells OpenAI's models by the token. Its flagship models as of Nov 6, 2026 are gpt-6-astra, gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-6.1-terra and gpt-6-luna, alongside specialized models for cybersecurity (GPT-6-Cyber, for approved defenders) and life sciences (GPT-Rosalind), image, realtime voice and transcription models. Developers build with the Responses API, the Agents SDK, the Realtime API, the Batch API and Fine-Tuning; prices are on OpenAI API Pricing and limits on API Rate Limits. The Assistants API shut down on Aug 26, 2026, and Agent Builder shuts down on Nov 30, 2026.

Models

OpenAI's current models are the GPT-6 family: GPT-6 Astra, the most capable (Sep 3, 2026); GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna (Sep 22, 2026); GPT-6.1 Sol (Sep 29, 2026); and GPT-6.1 Terra (Oct 26, 2026) (API changelog). Earlier generations, from GPT-4o and the o-series to GPT-5, are on GPT Model History, and what ChatGPT has dropped is on Retired ChatGPT Models. How they score on measured leaderboards is on OpenAI Benchmarks.

Open-weight models

gpt-oss is OpenAI's open-weight family, released on Aug 5, 2025: gpt-oss-120b (117 billion parameters, 5.1 billion active) and gpt-oss-20b (21 billion, 3.6 billion active), both under the Apache 2.0 license. Two safety classifiers built on them, gpt-oss-safeguard-120b and 20b, followed on Oct 29, 2025. No 2026 successor to gpt-oss was found as of Nov 6, 2026.

Images, video and voice

Image generation is now ChatGPT Images, at version 2.6 since Nov 4, 2026, available on every plan; developers use the same models as GPT Image. It replaced DALL-E, OpenAI's image model line from Jan 5, 2021, whose API models shut down on May 12, 2026.

OpenAI has no video product as of Nov 6, 2026. Sora launched as a product on Dec 9, 2024 and Sora 2 with its social app on Sep 30, 2025; the app and website were discontinued on Apr 26, 2026 and the API on Sep 24, 2026, with "no one-to-one replacement API". For video now, see Sora vs Veo.

Voice runs on the GPT-Live models in Voice Mode and in the Realtime API for developers; speech-to-text and text-to-speech models are on Whisper and Audio Models.
